Rating=10: Couldn't put it down-- at last, some insight! I live with the person that this book describes. For six years of marriage I have been alternately perplexed and frustrated, angry and confused. Reading this book has allowed me to appreciate my wife's special needs. At last I feel that we communicate. At last I have learned that her _words_ are not the same as what she really _means_, and I listen for the emotion as well as the content. This book helped a lot. It is easy to read (although sometimes a bit troubling), and well worth the cost. Now I'm buying copies for relatives and our family doctor.

Rating=10: I've finally found something that describes ME! Having finished this very readable book in one sitting, I found myself excitedly turning page after page wondering what would be the next insight into myself! Richard Moskovitz has found a way to communicate about a very difficult-to-describe subject matter in a most captivating way!

Cross and the Switchblade, David Wilkerson. List: $4.99 Our Price: $3.99 You Save: $1.00 (20%). This book is the foundation of Teen Challenge, a charitable movement of Christian recovery that now has 220 programs throughout the United States. One reader writes:
Rating=10: ... In his autobiography ,"The Cross and the Switchblade", David Wilkerson gives new insight to the meaning of Jesus' words: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23, NIV). Wilkerson denied himself as he risked his life to reach out to the least of these. He lived out the compassion with which Jesus ministered. I recommend this book to anyone who needs encouragement in obeying God, especially when the road is unknown.

Before It's Too Late: Why Some Kids Get into Trouble and What Parents Can Do About It, Stanton E. Samenow. List: $23.00 ~ Our Price: $16.10 ~ You Save: $6.90 (30%). This is a superb, often brilliant discussion of a group of kids that the author calls, "anti-social." Such a child (page 121):
. . . stands outside the mainstream of society, attempting to impose on the world his view that life is a one-way street. He is oblivious of the injury that he inflicts on others and, in fact, does not even have a concept of injury. When his pursuit of excitement goes awry, he lies and blames others. The result ultimately is that he remains an outsider to human affairs. Toward all the people who believe in him, who recognize his potential, who would like to help him, his attitude is one of disdain.
Without effective intervention, the antisocial youngster will remain isolated and see human relationships solely as avenues for conquests and triumphs.
It is the author's point of view that parents and schools must identify these children early in life if they are to be effective in helping them. Additional research is needed about what works, but there are some methods that can be used now.
Since Dr. Samenow wrote, a substantial medical literature has arisen that suggests that there may be a neuro-psychological component to this syndrome. This subsequent development does not contradict this book, but it could provide an occasion for a revision.
Buy this book if you are concerned that your child seems to be dishonest and cannot be trusted. Dr. Samenow will provide you with important insights into the forces that may be at work in your child.

Rule of the Bone: A Novel, Russell Banks. List: $10.00 ~ Our Price: $8.00 ~ You Save: $2.00 (20%). This novel is especially poignant when read by parents of an anti-social, "borderline," or dual-diagnosis child. Written in the tradition of such classics as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye, Banks' astonishing new novel tells the story of a homeless youth living on the edge of society--a lost boy who maps the cruel world that surrounds him with motherwit, humor, and appalling honesty. A reader who recognized himself in this book writes:

rating=9: reading this book on a whim, i was entranced. stories and events so real. as i devoured the story at a unbelieveable pace, i pictured every long haired angry scary misunderstood kid ducking society and just trying to get by the best they can figure out. i pictured myself a few years back, running wild yet very scared, just wishing someone would come by and hug me and pet my hair and say everything was going to be cool again. i pictured my little brother now- admittedly not so little anymore- yet not nearly as confident and intelligent as he thinks he is. i pictured him as he is, angry, mistunderstood, just trying to find a place where he feels at home again, struggling to feel safe in an indifferent world that no longer sees a need to protect and look out for its youth.
