"Netscape was unable to locate the host 'xxx.xxxxxxx.xxx'. The server does not have a DNS entry. Check the server name the location (URL) and try again."

What it is

Okay. This is one of those errors that sounds like it should be really easy to solve. But this error can be generated by a lot of things, from incorrect configurations to software conflicts and beyond. Ready? Here we go...

Procedure

Make sure this happens every time they try and connect. If they got it once, panicked, and called us, have them re-connect and try again. If the first page gives them a DNS entry, try clicking on the "Home" button. Sometimes trying it again is all it takes. If that fails:

  1. Follow the instuctions below to check the DNS settings in the MacTCP or TCP/IP Control Panel
    1. Determine which version of the Mac System software the customer is using.

Now check the table below. It will tell you which Control Panel to check for:

      System Software version

      Control Panel

      7.1.x

      MacTCP 2.0.6

      System 7.5 and 7.5.1

      MacTCP 2.0.6

      System 7.5.3 and 7.5.5

      MacTCP or TCP/IP

      System 7.6

      TCP/IP

    2. Go to the menu and choose "Control Panels"
    3. Bring up the MacTCP or TCP/IP, whichever is there. If neither one is there, that's probably the problem, and you'll need to install it.
  2. Do a Find File for TCP and AOL. Make sure you restart after moving any extensions to the desktop.
  3. It's possible that the Netscape disk cache has become too full. Click here for a step-by-step for checking the size.
  4. Disable RAMDoubler.
  5. Check the Port Speed and Flow Control.
