Checking the condition of the Netscape disk cache

Preliminary Note

Customers will not have to follow this procedure themselves when clearing the disk cache. This procedure is to allow Tech Support to see how large the disk cache is and then decide if it's too large. Customers simply need to open Netscape, go to "Options" and choose "Network Preferences...", click on "Cache" and then click where is says "Clear Disk Cache Now" (see image below)

Procedure

  1. Quit Netscape (This means actually go to "File" and choose "Quit", not simply close the current web browser. If Netscape is running during this process, it can cause problems).
  2. If the icon the the far upper-right hand corner of the screen doesn't look like this: , click on whatever icon is there and choose "Finder." If it already looks like that, go to Step 3.
  3. Go to the and choose "About this Macintosh...
  4. Double-click on the icon

  5. Go into the System Folder
  6. Go into the Preferences Folder

  7. Go into the folder

  8. Click once on the folder

  9. Go up to the "File" menu bar item and choose "Get info..." You should see something like this:

Note the Size entry. By default, Netscape keeps a 5 Megabyte cap on the size of this folder. It doesn't always work-- It has been seen as high as 20 Megs. If the cache is much over 3 megs (especially on systems with 8-12 megs of RAM), take the whole folder and throw it in the trash (Netscape will rebuild it as needed).

That will take care of any cache problems, although it is generally recommended that you restart the computer after doing this. >
