Who we are
The Greater Boston Chapter of NSCIA is a nonprofit organization whose goals include advocacy, injury prevention, peer visitation, research, resource information, public awareness, education, and social activities.

Greater Boston Chapter members include individuals with a spinal cord injury or other disability, their families, health care and rehabilitation professionals, policy makers, and others interested in spinal cord injury. As a chartered chapter of NSCIA we offer fresh ideas, enthusiastic members, energetic goals, and a determined outlook.

BAA BOSTON MARATHON

ALL Runners are invited to join NSCIA’s 102nd Boston Marathon Team in 1998.

We are recruiting 35 runners who have not met the offical BAA qualifying times for the Boston Marathonä. please let us know if you are interested by contacting NSCIA's Greater Boston Chapter, John F. Fioriti, (781)-933-8666 ext. 2 or sciboston@aol.com

Last year, 33 runners completed in the 101st Running of the Boston Marathon raising funds for NSCIA and the Greater Boston Chapter. Each runner pledged to raise $1250. A special thanks goes out to Bill Benjes. He ran the 1st marathon for us in 1991, after completing his recovery from a non-neurological SCI. Bill initiated our participation in the Boston Marathon as an official charity, only 9 charities are allowed to compete.

To Join the National Spinal Cord Injury Association’s 1998 Marathon Team:

  • All runners must raise $1250 to make the team.
  • All Qualified Runners can join our team at anytime.
  • All new runners must turn in $750 in pledges by Feb. 25th in order to receive an official Boston Athletic Association number for the marathon. (To guarantee your number, the $750 in pledges may be put on a credit card, if you are unable to collect the pledges by Feb. 25th ).
  • Individuals who run for us do not have to meet the qualifying times; all qualified runners or wheelers are invited to join our team and help support the other runners on our team. Also, there is an $75 BAA application fee; the $15 dollar USA-Track Field membership fee is optional this year.

Special Programs and Courses

SCI Peer Training
Help others with SCI get through the early stages of disability

The NSCIA's Greater Boston Chapter is conducting it's second peer visitation training program through a grant from the Massachusetts Health and Research Institute.

The Program will start in May and will consist of 6 sessions. The training group will meet once a week for a two-two and half hour sessions. A central location will be selected based on the transportation stipulations of individuals interested in becoming peer visitors.

Michael Ferriter, MSW, director of the chapter's nationally renown Peer Visitation program, will conduct the training.
