16th Autocross WNE(6/13/2004, FedEx Field):
SETUP(same as 5/30/2004 Except):
- Added Spring Rubbers to each front spring
(already had one in each so that's 2 per side).
- 23.5" x 10.5" Goodyear Slicks

The stiffened front springs dialed
a bit of the Pre-swaybar reinstall
push back in, but nowhere near as
bad as before the swaybar. Tried
pulling the rubbers, but was a few
tenths faster with them. Going to
dial in a bit more damping and try
half a rubber next time. Tight, fussy
course layout, more tire would really
have helped (16"x10" Wheels with
23.5"x11.5 Hoosiers are coming). |
17th Autocross WNE(8/01/2004, Rosecroft):

- Added to 1/2 Spring Rubber in each front
spring (1.5 per side total).
- Dialed the shocks up to 1/3 turn out from max
rebound.
- 245 45 16 Toyo Proxes RA-1 tires On 16"x8" Wheels.
- Tire Pressure: 30 Psi Front/30 Psi Rear.
- Replaced pasengers's sport seat with aluminum
circle track seat. About a 20 pound weight savings.

CP Class Winner: | 57.121 |
Me: | 57.121 (GRINN) |
FTD: 1990 Caterham 7 (DM) | 50.609 |
Fun, fast course. Dry for the
first rungroup (when FTD was set)
but REALLY poured halfway through the
2nd run group. I ran in the 3rd group
on a wet course but the rain had stopped.
The Mustang really worked pretty well
in the wet with the full tread deapth
Toyos (Yea I was the only prepared class
driver/car at the event, Hee... Sigh...).
|
18th Autocross WNE(8/08/2004, FedEx Feild):
SETUP(same as 8/01/2004 Except):
- Tire Pressure: 30 Psi Front/28.5 Psi Rear.
- Replaced 4 row coper-brass radiator with an
aluminum Griffin 2 row rated for 600BHP.
Netted about a 6 pound weight savings.
AND much better cooling.
RESULT:
DRIVER | TIME |
CP Class Winner: | 59.727 |
Me: | 61.908 |
FTD: TonyKart (F125) | 50.496 |
Fun, Serpintine course. Beatiful dry
sunny weather for the whole day, High in
low 80s. Ol'Beastly really worked pretty
well with the full tread deapth Toyos, but
the FedEx surface is a little slick for such
a durable tire, so I put on a bit of a
drifting exhibition (including a spin
on my second run) and finally had to spot
my competition a little over 2 seconds (SIGH).
|
19th Autocross WNE(8/15/2004, Rosecroft):
SETUP(same as 8/08/2004 Except):
- Tire Pressure: 30 Psi Front/28.5 Psi Rear.
- Installed a Cobra Automotive
tubular front swaybar.
Demensions are: 29" long;
10" arm length; 1.25" OD;
and 0.160" wall thickness.
It weighs 5 pounds less than
the 1" it replaced and
is about 65% stiffer.
RESULT:
DRIVER | TIME |
CP Class Winner: | 48.570 |
Me: | 48.570(GRINN) |
FTD: '79 Caterham 7 (DM) | 45.372 |
Fun, Serpintine course. Beatiful dry
sunny weather for the most of the day, High in
low 80s. Ol'Beastly really worked pretty
well with the new swaybar as it tamed the
tail happyness a little. Only had one clean
run but the car was workiing pretty well
even if the driver wasn't. Kindly my last
run was posted as an off course (OC) sparing
me from a public posting of my highest ever
cone body count (BFEG). I beleive this is
the closest I've ever been to FTD.
|
20th Autocross WNE(8/29/2004, Rosecroft):
SETUP(same as 8/15/2004 Except):
- Tire Pressure: 29 Psi Front/27.5 Psi Rear.
- Removed bumper mounts, attaching the bumper
to the body work with four 6" strips of
0.125" x 0.75" aluminum (about a 10 pound
weight savings).
- Removed Spare, Jack, and Tool Box from the trunk
for the first time since I started Autocrossing
Ol'Beastly.
RESULT:
DRIVER | TIME |
CP Class Winner: | 57.209 |
Me: | 57.209(GRINN)* |
FTD: Caterham 7 DM | 51. |
This was a fun, fast, mostly 2nd gear
course. It was layed out as a pair of large
figure eights connected by a long sweeper.
My only fast run (if you can call it that)
was my first as I spun on the other two of
my three runs. Balance was better than with
the spare & jack in the trunk, but the driver
was a little loos (SIGH).
* Steve Brown came to, and ran, this event with
his '86 Mustan 'Vert. I saw him run a 46.446,
but he doesn't show in the results although
I DID run across this photo:
Steve Hammering the 'Vert.

Ol'Beastly Going (Lifting the Left Front)!
Tire Detail.
SETUP(same as 8/29/2004 Except):
- Tire Pressure: 28 Psi Front/26.5 Psi Rear.
- Installed adjustable end links on front
swaybar, shortening the swaybar arms by about 0.5".
RESULT:

Fast, mostly 2nd gear, course on FedEx Lot A.
The Surface at FedEx is a little slick for the
RA-1s but I had fun anyway. Still a little
loos but better than it was last week, Need more
front spring rate and more rebound damping at
both ends. Note to Toyo Proxes RA-1 users: Use
the minimum pressure that will keep the tire from
rolling over AND that provides decent feedback at
the steering wheel. I started at 30/30 and have
worked down to 28/26.5 in 0.5 PSI increments.
Note: I've started tracking D Modfied as a better
for comparison than just FTD as the arrival of
shifter carts on the scene (F125) has dropped FTD
by 4 or 5 seconds.

22nd Autocross WNE(10/03/2004, FedEx):
Ol'Beastly Enjoying some grip for a change! IMG is about 218K.
Hey! Why is my nose drooping to the left! (Lifting the Right Front)! IMG is about 270K.
SETUP(same as 9/05/2004 Except):
- Tire Pressure: 28.5 Psi Front/29 Psi Rear.
- Installed rear fender flares and clearenced
front fenders for more tire clearence.
- Installed 16"x10" Circle Racing wheels and
23.5"x11.5" Hoosier slicks.
RESULT:

Fast, all 2nd gear, course on FedEx Lot A.
The new tires really helped on the slic
FedEx lot surface, but now I have to
relearn how to drive the car:
- 61.161, buffing the release agent
off the tires on the first run with
starting pressures of 29/29.
- 59.345, adjusted the pressures to
28.5/28 but it felt like the rear
tires were squerming a bit too much
and the car really wanted to push.
Still, I was starting to get the
feel of the new set up and went faster.
- 59.018, went to 28.5/29 and the car
felt much better coming out of corners
and turned in better too. I realized
about halfway through this run that I
could use the brakes and gas MUCH harder
than I have in the past and picked up
more time.
- 57.997, 28.5/29 and tried to apply what
I'd figured out on the last run. still
left 2-3 secondes out on the course.
Need to use even MORE brakes & gas and
remenber to heal-n-toe my downshifts
(had a truely horendous case of wheel
hop coming into the final hairpin when
I dropped it into 1st and popped the
clutch without blipping the throttel.
Heh, I felt like the rear axle was
coming out of the car!).

23rd Autocross WNE(10/10/2004, Roscroft):
SETUP(same as 10/03/2004 Except):
- Tire Pressure: 26.5 Psi Front/29 Psi Rear.
- Installed Front fender flares
RESULT:

Tight technical and fast course, shifted
between 1st and 2nd gear 3 times per run,
The new tires did not really help on the
this gravel covered lot strewn with larger
chunks of pavement. Last time I try to run
slicks at this location until they repave.
