All participants are required to attend an orientation program in Washington, DC given prior to each training course. Participants attending more than one course in a sequence are not required to attend subsequent orientation sessions.
Wednesday: Participants arrive in Washington, DC and check in to a downtown hotel selected and arranged by the USTTI. Because of scheduling requirements, all participants must stay at the hotel selected by the USTTI.
Thursday: A USTTI staff member meets participants at the hotel and escorts them to the USTTI's offices for the orientation program. During the afternoon session, administrative details are completed, logistical information concerning training and domestic travel is given to participants, and cross-cultural training is conducted. In the evening, participants and guests from private industry and the Federal Government attend a welcome dinner hosted by the USTTI staff at a local restaurant.
Friday: A full day of orientation takes place on Friday. In the morning session, course sponsors discuss logistical details and participant expectations for the course. At noon, the USTTI hosts an informal luncheon for participants, staff, and invited guests from private industry and the Federal Government. Included in Friday's orientation are guest speakers, who are typically officials in the Executive Branch, the Congress, or the Federal Communications Commission, and who provide participants with an overview of U.S. communications policies and practices.
Saturday: The USTTI arranges a bus tour of Washington, DC on Saturday that includes the city's historical sites, cultural enclaves, and national monuments.
Sunday: Participants travel to training sites where the corporate or governmental training will take place.
At the conclusion of most training courses, a member of the USTTI staff travels to the training location to conduct a candid written and oral evaluation of the course. If a USTTI representative is unable to attend the graduation, participants are provided evaluation forms to complete privately for review by USTTI staff in Washington. The evaluation process is designed to identify additional training needs and to ensure that the USTTI curriculum continues to be responsive to participant needs. Most corporate and federal training sponsors conduct a graduation ceremony, where USTTI and sponsor certificates are awarded to participants in recognition of their successful completion of the course.
Participants return to their countries immediately upon conclusion of their training since their insurance coverage and/or visa typically expire with the conclusion of USTTI training.
