Modem doesn't dial

Causes

Chances are you're never going to hear "My modem doesn't dial." You usually have to ask. What you will hear is "Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection. There may be insufficient system resources or the network may be down. Reason: Network is down." There are only two main things to check, one of which leads to all sorts of potential fixes.

Procedure

  1. Find out if the customer is using "ConfigPPP" or "FreePPP Setup". If they are using "ConfigPPP", it is access by going up to the menu, choosing "Control Panels", and then selecting "ConfigPPP" (This software was shipped standard to Erol's customers prior to mid-1996). If it's not there, it's a fair bet that that they're using the FreePPP Setup. Have the customer bring up whatever program they are using.
  2. Find out if the "Connect" button (in the FreePPP Setup) or the "Open" button (ConfigPPP) is black or grey.
  3. If it's black, have the customer click on it, and see if the modem dials (or at least tries to. If it does, simply inform them that they should be clicking on that button, letting it dial and connect, and bringing up Netscape afterwords. If nothing happens, the next step is to delete and re-create the PPP preferences file.
  4. If the button in question is grey, click here.
