Dealing with Multiple PPP Extensions

The Problem

Different versions of the PPP dialler have been released at various times in recent history. The MacPPP (or FreePPP 1.0.5) was one of the diallers of choice in late 1995 to early 1996, and many people still have one of them installed. They shipped as a standard item in several Internet packages, including the Apple Internet Connection Kit and the Internet Valet.

In mid-1996, FreePPP 2.5 was released. Its somewhat more complicated interface is offset its more reliable connection and its ability to maintain settings for multiple ISPs (including DNS). The thing to watch for is that the extensions used by these diallers are different, and will conflict heavily if both are in the Extensions Folder at the same time.

Procedure

  1. Determine of the customer is using the ConfigPPP or the FreePPP Setup. If they have both installed, configure them for the FreePPP Setup.
  2. Double-click on the icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen
  3. Double-click on the System Folder
  4. Double-click on the Extensions Folder
  5. Locate the extension (either PPP or FreePPP) for the dialler they are NOT using and drag it to the Trash. For example, if they have the FreePPP Setup installed, and both the PPP and FreePPP extensions are installed, drag the PPP extension to the Trash.
  6. Restart the computer
