Lunachicks Reviews 1999

November 27, 1999 Austin, TX @ Stubbs

When I found out the Lunachicks weren't coming to Houston, I was really bummed, but then I realized that I could drive a few hours to Austin and get to see 'em.. So we got there pretty earlier, and the club had a restraunt upstairs so we thought we'd get sumthin to eat. Well guess who walks in right behind us.... So we talked to 'em and got some stuff signed and got some pictures. A few hours later the show started and I was in the very front, right in front of Theo. It lasted about 45 minutes and was the greatest show I've ever seen. The outfits were adorable. I got Theos (yay!) They played all the best songs, and when they did Dropdead, Theo said in a valley girl voice"This song is just soooo punk rock!!" It was adorable. After the show we were walkin around and I saw Theo outside the bus and she had her video camera and taped us, which was kinda weird, then we got more pictures with her. The new drummer, Helen, was so sweet. We talked to her for awhile too. She said that playing with them is her college education. The whole band was really nice and down to earth. Anywayz, it was a blast and I can't wait to see 'em again.

November 2, 1999 Cincinnati, OH @ Bogart's

(read his review for the Oct 29th show first)

Then, 3 days later I went and saw the Lunachicks again at Bogart's in Cincinnati on November 2nd and there was like nobody at the show. I was actually the first person in the club which was a bit weird. The show was basically the same as the Columbus show except that the Lunachicks played
2nd at this show. The opening band was the Candy Snatchers and they were okay and then came the Lunachicks. They put on another amazing set and had the same outfits they had when I saw them in Columbus. It was the exact same setlist too but that didn't bother me as I just love the Lunachicks. I was glad I got to see them 2 more times as they are just such an amazing live band.

October 29, 1999 Columbus, OH @ Al Rosa Villa

Well, I went and saw the Lunachicks at the Al Rosa Villa in Columbus, OH on October 29th and I'm glad I went. I hadn't seen the Lunachicks since the Warped Tour and I was really happy to be seeing them in such a small venue as that is where they seem to excel. The opening band was a Go Kart band called Plan A Project and I really liked them. There was nobody there for their set though. Next was Down By Law and for some reason they really didn't impress me. I think I was anticipating the Lunachicks too much. The Lunachicks played next and what an awesome set they put on. The band looked great too! Both Squid & Gina had matching outfits which were these like cheerleading outfits. It was like a yellow vinyl top and a black vinyl skirt. The yellow top that Gina wore said "LUNA" and the yellow top that Squid wore said "CHICKS" so that was cool. Theo had this black vinyl dress on which was neat. And their new drummer, Helen Destroy, just had on a Tool shirt & she has burgundy hair and she's really nice though. I didn't even know the Lunachicks had a new drummer until I saw them live. I wonder what happened to Chip as I didn't even hear anything about her leaving. Their set was blistering and they blasted through a set that included both new and old songs. I got the setlist and I took a ton of pics at the show too. Here's the setlist:
DOTTI
LUX
FDS
DON'T WANT
GERBIL
SAY WHAT
JERK
CRASH
KNUCKLE
LESS TEETH
DROP
SUBWAY
CARS
SHUT
After the set, I went and bought some Lunachicks merchandise and left the club as I didn't want to stay for the Buzzcocks. I headed out back by the buses in hopes of getting some autographs from the Lunachicks. I didn't wait long and out came Gina and she signed all the vinyl that I had. She was
super cool and remembered me from the last times that I had seen them. She told me to hangout for awhile and the rest of the band should be out. Well, a short while later, the new drummer Helen Destroy came out and saw me waiting and told me that the band probably wouldn't be coming back out. However, she took my stuff into the bus and had the rest of the band sign it which was too cool of her. She was really nice and it was really cool to meet the Lunachicks new drummer.

October 27, 1999 State College, PA @ Crowbar

The Lunachicks----what can possibly be said that hasn't already been said about the greatest punk band in the world?!!!! This being my 5th time seeing them I was totally excited!!!!

I waited around outside before the show and talked to Squid( who tattooed me last January) and a little while later I got to chat with Theo and Gina. After talking to them my best friend and I went in and watched the first 2 bands Plan A Project and Down By Law. Next came the lovely ladies!!!!!! Theo was wearing a black vinyl dress and black
platform shoes, Gina and Squid had on matching dresses(Gina's dress said LUNA and Squid's dress said CHICKS) and the new drummer Helen had on jeans and a Lunachicks shirt.

The show was filled the energy and excitement that only a Lunachicks show has and it totally ROCKED!!!!! The setlist included the following songs: Dear Dotti; Luxury Problem; FDS; Don't Want You; The Day Squid's
Gerbil Died; Say What You Mean; Jerk of all Trades; Knuckle Sandwich; Less Teeth More Tits; Just What I Needed (Cars cover) and Shut You Out.

After the show I talked to and got a picture with Helen. The Lunachicks certainly deserve top credit for all they have worked for and if you ever have a chance to see them, DON'T MISS THEM!!!!!!

October 26, 1999 Rochester, NY @ Gotham City Music Hall

This was my first experience with the Lunachicks. I had heard of them from a friend who lives in NYC, but never heard any of their music. I had won ticket on a local alternative radio station WBER (listen live on the web) http://wber.monroe.edu . I went with the lead guitarist of a local rock band called Wilkes Booth. We caught the end of Down By Law, who weren't bad. During the intermission, we were surprised to see Gina, Helen and Squid setting up their own equipment. I didn't recognize the opening song but I think it was Dear Dotti, we were preoccupied by the yellow and black vinyl outfits and Theo's platform shoes. From the very first song they were rockin! After growing up listening to the Ramones, I immediately fell in love with all of them. Some of my favorite song included The Day Squid's Gerbil Died, Say What You Mean, Jerk of all Trades and Drop Dead. I loved their rendition of the Cars' Just What I Needed. The new drummer Helen did a great job of keeping things together although I have never seen Chip play. They all seemed to be really in sync. I was so impressed with the amount of energy they were putting out. After their set ended, we stood there in awe. After experiencing The Lunachicks live, we couldn't imagine the Buzzcocks topping the show, so we left.

I am now a dedicated fan of the Lunachicks and will be traveling to NYC on Dec. 11th for their show at the Continental. I hope to meet them some day. I love this web site!!!

October 20, 1999 Newark, DE @ The Stone Balloon

Imagine my surprise when I found out that the Go Kart Across America Tour was making a stop in my state, Delaware! As I would find out later, this was the Lunachicks first time playing in DE. That was no surprise. Plan A Project from NJ and Down By Law played before the Lunachicks & Buzzcocks. The venue was pretty small, and the turnout was pretty pathetic. But it was cool to actually have room to breath and stand without getting pushed around by a bunch of people. Gina and Squid were in their matching pleated skirts-Gina in a yellow jersey #72, & Squid in her yellow Vultures shirt-Gina's hair looked grayish with purple tips and low top purple Converse to match. Theo looked like a girl from the 50s with a ankle long red dress that said "THEO" across the chest, complete with red heels. (See the pictures I took here) Their new drummer, Helen, had bright redish/purplish hair.

Enough with outfit descriptions..on to the more important part! They took the stage after Down By Law (who, by the way, introduced themselves as the Lunachicks!) and opened with "Dear Dotti." Theo was talking about how she knew a lot about the state of DE...about how it was the smallest state, the first state, etc... Anyway, they also played (in order) Luxury Problem, FDS, Don't Want You, The Day Squid's Gerbil Died, Say What You Mean, Jerk of all Trades, Crash, Knuckle, Less Teeth More Tits, a cover of the Cars' Just What I Needed, and Shut You Out. Their setlist originally included Drop Dead and Subway, but they ran outta time, so those got cut. During the beginning of their set, one of Theo's heels broke off, so she was stuck trying to stand up w/ one long heel and one broken heel. It was funny, but I felt bad for her! I'd take the damn shoes back for a refund!

The Lunachicks rocked as usual, even though it felt like there was something missing with Chip not there. But the new drummer hit the beats out as best she could. For long time Lunachicks fans, I think it's gonna be really strange to see the Lunachicks play without Chip, but it's something you be be forced to deal with. Wah!

Special thanks to Gina!

October 17, 1999 Washington, DC 9:30 Club

The Lunachicks with the Buzzcocks, down by law, and the candy snatchers @ the 9:30 Club in washington dc.

My friend sid and i were waiting for a friend to show up in front of the venue and we see Squid walk out and walk to the tour bus. i thought "no way" and walk over closer to her until i see it's totally her. i'm a couple yards away, still walking towards her, and i say "did u know i love you?" she says "hey" and my friend sid and i ask for an
autograph. she signed my wallet and the tour bus guy gave me paper for Squid to sign too. i gabe her a hug and thanked her. sid asks her "will you adopt us?!" squid stops for a second and goes "hmmm..maybe..how old r u?"
"14"
"Huh, i probably could" and she laughs. the tour bus dude said something which i didn't catch. anyways, i left happy and i saw her walking around a little later and i took a pic with her.

October 15, 1999 Carrboro, NC Cat's Cradle

The Lunachicks...what can I say? They're the best punk band I've seen in
3 years. I went to the show ; which also featured Reinforce, Down By Law, and
the Buzzcocks, and by far , the night ended with me being in love with this
band. They came out, and without hesitation, got the crowd to go absolutely
insane. I had heard of them before, but never got the chance to listen to
them. Besides playing their asses off, they're beautiful women ,leaving much
of the crowd with their jaws on the floor. I myself, am in love with Squid.
And by the context of their songs, not many people have told them that in the
past.
But to go on, they obviously came to the punk scene to show us that ,
once again, women can do something just as well as the men can...even better.

June 12, 1999 Bowery Ballroom, NYC

Luxury Problem Release Party!

I traveled a few hours to see this show, and it was well worth it. I was not disappointed. But how can you be disappointed with the Lunachicks? Plan-A-Project and Turbo AC's opened up. The place was pretty empty until halfway through Turbo AC's set. Lunachicks came on around 11:30. There was a big Lunachicks banner behind them. Gina was in a pink vinyl. Squid had on black short-shorts and a tight yellow shirt w/ black ringer that said "Vultures."(ala Debbie Harry) Chip was wearing black vinyl pants with silver stars up the side and a red jersey. Theo's outfit was quite stunning, you have to see the pictures to understand. She had tons of hair, topped with a feather headpiece and glitter was everywhere.

They opened with "Bad Ass Bitch." Other songs they played included "The Day Squid's Gerbil Died," "Spork," "Fingerful,""Subway," "I'll be the One," "Jerk of all Trades," "Apathetic," "Less Teeth, More Tits," "Crash," "FDS," "Knuckle Sandwich," and they closed with "Luxury Problem" and "Drop Dead."

Sometime during the set, Theo invited Sid the Smelly Go Kart Intern and his girlfriend on stage and announced that Sid lost his virginity earlier that day while listening to a Lunachicks song. When someone asked what song, he replied "ugh..Brickface & Stucco" sounding kinda confused. Theo gave Sid a crown and his girlfriend devil horns, both made out of aluminum foil.

The band was really energetic and they sounded great. Some girl behind me handed Theo a sticker that said "Barbie is a Slut" and Theo put it on her chest after saying something like "Barbie is a slut? Well, I guess so since she doesn't have a pussy."

I was sad that the show had to end, but I had fun and I can't wait for the next show. A few people videotaped the show, and if you're one of them email me! I would love to see a tape of the show!

Much love to the Lunachicks! Thanks!
