A Story for Mary Jo was apparently drafted by Maurice E. Scroggins as a story to be read or told to his granddaughter, Mary Jo Scroggins. There are really two separate stories set out in the original. Mary Jo was born in late 1948, "Grosmutter," referred to in the present tense died in October 1954, and some related correspondence all suggest that the stories were most likely written sometime between 1952 and 1954.
These are clearly stories and not a completely accurate historical account. They were written over 150 years after some of the events related in the first story, and few records survive that relate to the characters in either story. While some of the names of people are not mentioned, or appear to be incorrect, the general story line quite plausibly refers to what may well have been actual events.
The commented version of the stories, following the original version, have been reformatted with annotations about specific people or places mentioned in the stories. The genealogical chart may help with understanding the people mentioned, and the map shows the general migration of the Scroggins family during the period covered.
Information about most of the people in the stories may be found online at several sites. Nearly all of the people for all but the last few generations are in the Ancestral File of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at http://www.familysearch.org. There is information about many of the Scroggins, with pointers to other sites, at http://users.erols.com/scroggjm/scrogginsdata.
