early education at the West Chester Military academy, whence he graduated first in his class. He afterwards attended the Rensselaer Polytechnic institute at Troy, N. Y., from which he graduated in mechanical and metallurgical engineering, chemistry, and electricity with the second honors of his class. He then studied law in the office of ex-Judge F. Carroll Brewster, Philadelphia, and durIng the attorney-generalship of that gentleman was his assistant. He then became associated with George Harding of that city, in the practice of patent law and subsequently entered into his present partnership with J. Bonsall Taylor, in the practice of that branch of the profession and in the soliciting of American and foreign patents. His education, experience, and ability, and the large number of patent cases in which he has been engaged have placed him in
the very front rank of this branch of his profession. He was appointed by the government assistant attorney-general of the United States, a few years since, in the case brought by it against the American Bell Telephone co., for the cancellation of the patents on telephones granted to Alexander Graham Bell.
