Recreation Facilities in Warren Township

Municipal Grounds

The Municipal Grounds are located adjacent to and behind the Municipal Building, Library and Police Station at 46 Mountain Boulevard. Comprising approximately 25 acres, the grounds include five multi-purpose fields that can be used as five ball fields, including two lighted fields or four soccer fields. A covered pavilion with rest rooms and water fountains is available for use. Permission forms are available at the Municipal Building. Part of the area is lit and used for night football practice as well as various expositions, concerts and large community special events. There are also a basketball court, picnic area and a playground with equipment and three tennis courts.


Summer Playground

The Warren Recreation Commission sponsors a summer playground program at the Municipal Grounds that runs six weeks each summer beginning the first full week after school closes. The program is open to all Warren youngsters ages six years through Middle School and is held weekdays from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There are a variety of offerings weekly which includes arts and crafts and numerous board games. The playground staff supervises various sports such as soccer, baseball, tennis, basketball and golf, with emphasis placed on participation and a good learning experience.

Each week also offers a swim day at Warrenbrook for a nominal fee, a feature movie is shown and there is a weekly trip. Previous trips were enjoyed at Sesame Place, Bronx Zoo, Yankee Stadium, Paper Mill Playhouse, Bowcraft, USA Skate and Bowling Lanes.

The program concludes with a picnic (weather permitting) and games with ribbons awarded to all participants.


Warrenbrook Park

Located on Warrenville Road, Warrenbrook Park is a facility operated by Somerset County Park Commission. The public facility includes an 18 hole golf course, pro shop and club house, swimming pools for adults and children, and cross country skiing. It is also the location for the Somerset County Multipurpose Senior Center. This center is run by member contributions and voluntary direction through the Somerset County Office on Aging and offers programs and hot lunches all week. Its programs include trips, theatrical groups, dancersize, arts and crafts, shopping tips, yoga, bingo, oil painting and holiday parties.

Recreational Activities Guide for Warren Residents

Following are the wide variety of sports activities open to Warren Township "residents" sponsored by the Warren Recreation Commission. Announcements of seasonal registrations and tryouts are announced in the local papers and on Warren Cable TV 12. Sports involving children are also made through the schools. Most activities require an annual nominal fee to cover materials, tournament registrations and other operating costs.


BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL

The Warren Baseball Association is an independent, non-profit organization that administers baseball and softball for Township boys and girls starting in Kindergarten through High School.

The Warren Baseball Association’s leagues are "must play" recreational programs in which all players participate in every game, regardless of ability.

Leagues Include
Tee Ball - girls and boys age 5 and in Kindergarten Pigtail Softball - girls grades 1-2
Mustang Baseball - boys grades 1-2 Junior Ponytail Softball - grades 3-4
National Baseball - boys grades 3-4 Ponytail Softball - girls grades 5-6
American Baseball - boys grades 5-6 Senior Ponytail Softball - girls grades 7-8
Senior Baseball - boys 7th grade and up Girls High Softball - girls grades 9 and up

Registration begins in January. Practices are in late March.
Games are held April through June.

Summer All-Star Program

The All-Star program is a competitive program where not all applicants necessarily play. Coach recommendations and tryouts are held in April and May. Games are played throughout June and July against teams from other communities.

Golden Warrior’s Softball Association

The Golden Warriors Softball Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide summer and fall softball programs for girls in Warren, Watchung, Long Hill and Greenbrook. The summer league includes girls ages 10 to 18. Tryouts are held in May and games are played in June and July. The Fall League program is for high school-age girls. The games are played on Sunday in September and October. A Winter Softball Pitching and Fielding clinic is also offered from January through March. The clinic is for girls 4th grade and above. Notification is made through the schools, local papers and at the library.

BASKETBALL

A basketball program for boys and girls in grades 3 through middle school is sponsored by the Warren Township Recreation Commission.

In Town Program

For boys and girls grades three through eight. Registration is held in November. Season is from December through March.

Adult Basketball Open Gym

A basketball open gym for adults is held Monday evenings at Warren Middle School, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., October through May.

FOOTBALL

Pop Warner Football

The Watchung Hills Pop Warner Football Association was incorporated in 1971 with the purpose of teaching pre-high school boys 8 to 13 years of age in Warren, Watchung and Long Hill Townships the fundamentals of tackle football. In 1993, Flag Football teams were started for boys and/or girls ages 5 to 7. The Association is a member of the Mountain Valley Conference and is administered by a Board of Directors.

Registration is held in March. Season is from August through November.

Cheerleading

All girls registering for Pop Warner become members of our Cherokee Squad. For those girls interested in our cheerleading squad, we will be holding mandatory placements in August. There will Be non-mandatory instructional sessions so that the girls may learn the cheers in August.

Registration is held in March. Season is from August through November.

ICE SKATING

An area behind the playground at the Municipal Grounds is flooded each year for recreational skating for all ages. It is lit and divided into hockey and figure skating areas. The pavilion fireplace is available for fires. Skating availability is weather permitting.


SOCCER

The Watchung Hills Soccer Association is a non-profit, all volunteer, organization administered by an eleven member Board of Directors. The Association sponsors fall, winter and spring programs composed of boys teams and girls teams, both in-town and travel, for players 6 through 19. The travel teams act as the Association’s All Star Program competing against other area teams. Volunteers are always needed for coaching, publicity, fund raising and serving on the Board of Directors.

In-Town (Fall)

Registration is held both June and September for the Fall season for both girls and boys divisions ages six through thirteen.

Travel (Fall)

Tryouts are held in early June for the Fall season for both boys and girls divisions ages six through eighteen.

In-town (Winter, Indoor)

Registration is held in November for the Winter season for both girls and boys divisions ages six through thirteen.

Travel (Winter, Indoor)

Weekend tournaments throughout the state are available for the Associations travel teams who wish to participate.

Travel (Spring)

Tryouts are held in November for the Spring season for both girls and boys divisions ages eight through nineteen.


TENNIS

The township's three tennis courts are located behind the Municipal Building. They are available without fee to Warren residents of all ages from Spring through Fall on a sign-up basis. Courts are lit until 10:30 p.m. A sign-up sheet is available at the Police Station.


WRESTLING

Competitive wrestling is available for first through 8th graders. Registration is held prior to the late November through February season. Competition is in the Suburban Wrestling League Tournaments - League Tournaments and State Qualifiers.

VOLLEYBALL

The Warren Volleyball Association was founded in 1976 by Mario Caruso and Norm Patterson to teach and promote power volleyball at all levels. The Association has hosted an international team from West Germany, sent players to the U.S. National Championships, and won the Men’s State Title and Junior Boys State Games repeatedly. Grade School

For grades 4 to 6 held in the Spring. A clinic is held in April.


High School

Season begins in April. Tournaments are in the Garden State Region, and play throughout NJ and NY.


Men’s League

There are 12 teams in 2 divisions. Teams are divided into skill level rather than by age. The Season is from September through Match.


Women’s Varsity Program

Teams are divided into divisions A and B levels. Season is from Fall through Spring.


Recreation League (coed)

Season is Fall through Spring.



OTHER SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES

High School Open Gym Physical Fitness Program

This program operates specific summer evenings for two-hour periods at the High School. Call the Recreation Department for the current schedule. Availability at High School and supervision paid by Warren, Watchung and Long Hill Recreation Departments.

Ski Trips

The Recreation Commission sponsors two ski trips annually.

Bus Trips

Throughout the year the Warren Recreation Commission sponsors bus trips to sports and recreational events at the Meadowlands and other arenas in the area.
