Marriage Bond -- Barton Scrogins and Dice Russel

State of Tennessee,

Know all men by these presents, That Barton Scrogins And
John Smith
of Grainger  our heirs, &c. &c. are jointly
and severally held and firmly bound unto his Excellency the Governor, or his suc-
cessors in office, in the penal sum of twelve hundred and fifty dollars,, void on con-
dition that there be no lawful objection why Barton Scogings
and Dice Russel  may not be joined together as man and
wife, in the holy state of matrimony.

Witness our hands and seals this 27th day of December
A.D. 1797 and in the xxii year of our Independence.

Only the bond survives, there does not appear to be either a return or record of one.

One of Barton's militia commanders in 1794 was named John Smith.
