Bruce Sagan (Violin, Nyckelharpa, Hardingfele) was a frequent featured fiddler at Scandia
D.C. during his two-year stay in the Washington area. Bruce has taught and played at a variety of folk music and dance camps and workshops, and has
been music director for Scandinavian Week and later Nordic Fiddles and Feet at Buffalo Gap Camp in
West Virginia as well as California's Stockton Folk Dance Camp. He was invited to play at the
Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC and has played for dances, workshops, and concerts in
the United States, Europe, and Australia. In addition to fiddle, Bruce plays Scandinavian music on the
haunting, highly ornamented Norwegian Hardingfele, the Swedish Nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle), and the
Tussefloyte (recorder). He has visited Scandinavia numerous times to work with fiddlers and collect
material. He was awarded the Zorn Diploma in Bronze on the basis of his playing before a jury of some
of Sweden's best fiddlers. This honor has been accorded to very few non-Swedes. Bruce's first album,
"Spelstundarna", has won critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. In a review of his second CD,
"With Friends", the premier Swedish folkmusic magazine Spelmannen said that he played "som en infoeding,"
i.e., "like a native." This is high praise in a country where it is often felt that you should only play
tunes from your own village. Bruce's new CD, Northlands, with Lydia ievins was released at the end
of March, 2010. You can order this CD at Order Northlands
