MP3 Of The Occasional Period Of Time How many covers are better than the original? Maybe Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U. More often, the cover completely bastardizes the original so completely it's unrecognizable. Think Linda Rondstadt. One of the more egregious covers was The Go-Go's covering Fun Boy Three's Our Lips Are Sealed. After listening (endlessly, no doubt) to The Go-Go's version you'd think it's just another pop song about...something...lips...being, um...sealed. In the hands of the original authors, it's a frighteningly authentic representation of what it's like to be an outcast. The tribal prison bass-drum-wicked-witch-of-west-monkey intro sets
the stage for the angst to follow. The Go-Go's seemed happy and self-assured
about their (lack of) social status. They knew that kooky, happy-go-lucky
babes always win out in the end. Fun Boy Three, sullen, depressed
and, if not gay then doing a good imitation of it, know how fucked
their situation is. Ignore it and it will go away, but not really.
They'll always hate you, so stick with your friends and watch your
back.
