The Hillandale Go Club (Closed operations Sept 30, 2008)

Introduction

The Hillandale Go Club was an official Chapter of the American Go Association (visit www.usgo.org). All Go players in the Washington DC/Baltimore/Frederick/NOVA region were welcome to join for free. In addition to our regular Thursday night meetings, we sponsored outreach programs throughout the area.

Background

The Club started as the Hillandale Go Group in October 1998. Our first site was the Grand China restaurant in the Hillandale Shopping Center. In 1999, the Washington DC area Shogi Group joined ranks with us every other week. The Shogi organizer is Larry Kaufman, at Lkaufman@wizard.net. In June 2000, we moved to the Shoney's restaurant across the street. In January 2001, the Shogi players decided to commit all of their Thursdays to the Hillandale site, prompting a change in the club name. We collected no annual dues, but donations were appreciated. Over the Summer of 2001, the Shogi players moved to Potomac MD and the Go/Shogi partnership was dissolved. In the fall of 2001, the club returned to its former location. The Chinese restaurant had been newly renovated in the interim and its name was changed to the Viet Palace restaurant. In January 2003, the club site moved to the Long Branch Community Center in Silver Spring MD. In 2008, after a prolonged period of low attendance, the operation was closed on September 30.

Meeting Site Dates, Directions, and Times

The club met at the Long Branch Community Center, 8700 Piney Branch Rd, Silver Spring, MD (between Flower Avenue and University Blvd). We met every Thursday from 630 PM to 900 PM.
