A few miles down from the silk road...
The Khan al Khalili market in Cairo is a scene right out
of Raiders of the Lost Ark. White-robed men puff on hookas in
grotty corner cafes, watching tourists bargain for gold, silver, and papyrus
scrolls. Whitewashed alley walls are layered with rugs (some still heavy
with the scent of the dusty villages where they were made) and camel saddle
coversheavy with tassles and brilliantly woven patterns. In each doorway,
the vendor has a smile, an extended hand to potential customers, and a cup
of tea ready to seal a deal. I fell in love with the Khan al Khalili, and
tried to go every day I was in Cairo, sitting at a shaded cafe, drinking
a iced potion of crushed strawberries or a cup of mint coffee, and watching
the parade of humanity pass by.
The Khalili Wrap reminds me of Cairoloose-fitting and
comfortable, with wide, cuffed sleeves, a v-front opening, closed with two
buttons (one hidden) at front, and vs at front, side, and back
bottom edge of jacket, accented with tassles at the tips of the vs
for an exotic, Middle Eastern feel. Made of medium weight cotton and/or
cotton flannels, the Khalili Wrap is perfect for transitional dressingboth
as outerwear and as a jacket for work or home. Can be decorated with a variety
of stamped images.
