Meetings:

March 14th Meeting in the Stafford Area
- New cost data announced
- Cut $400 million off the cost of acquisition, primarily in the cost of land
- Released details of the new funding above

March 21st Meeting of the Commonwealth Transportation Board
- CARD´s comments
- Suggestion by State Delegate Marshall to complete I-395 through the District if more north-south transportation is required in the area.
- Problems with the simulation model used by VDOT´s contractors to estimate need. The model reads high (especially in non-work trip estimation) when calibrated with actual traffic patterns! Current purpose and need data (which donŐt show a real need for the highway) will have to be revised downward with an honest model!

April 29th - State Senator Colgan held a Public Hearing before the Transportation Subcommittee of the State Senate Finance Committee on the Western Transportation Corridor. The hearing was at Stonewall Jackson High School, Rixlew Lane, Manassas (behind Manassas Mall) 6 to 9 P.M. The results of the meeting were widely described by the press; it was pretty clear for all to see that the majority of the people do not approve of this project.

Loudoun County Sees the Light! In addition to problems in Fauquier and Stafford counties, now Loudoun County has passed a resolution which rejects the Western Transportation Corridor Study as it exists! See the Loudoun Resolution as it was passed on 7 May 1997.

Loudoun County had apparently approved a concept with a crossing into Maryland back in November--however, be the concept something that was promoted by BARC or some other dream, the approved concept was not the Western Transportation Corridor Study. As people are starting to learn, the Western Transportation Corridor put forth by VDOT is not a "fill in the blank" or "essay" question, its more of a "multiple choice" or "true/false" concept. Three of the four counties involved are now having serious difficulty with the concept as put forth by VDOT.

Prince William is the only county where the project is nominally approved, but there are some signs of weakness here, too. Some supervisors have stated that they would not support corridors that "go through subdivisions" or that there are only a handful of homes in the powerline corridor. Unfortunately, this is not the case; and the same rules apply as for Loudoun County. What you see is what VDOT is offering--and the VDOT option is extremely destructive to homes, historic sites, and the environment.

Upcoming Events

April 7th - Meeting announced in the Stafford area to discuss with public the routes in the Quantico area has been postponed. Meeting has been postponed indefinitely due to problems encountered in pushing the corridor into Quantico. (Trouble in River City?)

The remainder of the schedule for the Western Transportation Corridor includes:
