Numbers Paint a Picture

Katrina left more than 25 million cubic yards of debris.  It’s not clear if these numbers include partial buildings still standing that need to be demolished.  It would take someone in a standard pick up truck more than 8 million trips to a waste facility to move this amount of debris.  If the number of pick up trips to haul 25 million cubic yards of debris line up, they would stretch around the world.  Twenty-five million cubic yards of debris placed in a building 100 feel by 100 feet would reach 13 miles into the sky.

To date, 16 million cubic yards of debris has been removed.   To haul away this much debris in pickup trucks would take enough trucks end to end that would stretch around the world!

  • 70% of the homes and businesses in Biloxi, 80% in Gulfport, and 90% in Waveland have been destroyed.

  •  75% of the fishing industry along the Mississippi has been destroyed.

  •  After six months, only $5.9 billion has been paid on 220,990 claims, averaging $22,625 per claim.

  •  29,864 FEMA trailers have been distributed in the 3 Mississippi coastal counties.

  •  192,516 FEMA registrations have been received from the 3 counties.

  •  $825 Million has been allocated by FEMA. About $4300 per household.

A little less than 50% of the members of Church of the Redeemer Episcopal have left the area, out of about 200 before the storm.  Many are not returning, so the church is facing a loss of pledge money.  These numbers are typical of all congregations.
