Winter 2007/2008
Church of the Ascension, in conjunction with Lutheran Episcopal Disaster Relief (LEDR), will be participating in efforts to provide assistance to the people in Mississippi who were impacted by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. A committee that will coordinate fundraising, physical donations, and work teams that will travel to Biloxi to assist in rebuilding homes and lives will support this long-range project. There will be many opportunities to serve on both long and short term committees locally, as well as to take part in mission trips arranged either by our church, or one of the other churches participating in this effort.
It’s estimated that LEDR will be working actively in the area for eight to ten years, and that the needs will change during that time. Our intention is to work in conjunction with the established administrative and medical center at Bethel Lutheran to be in a position to provide the most effective support possible. This will be a great opportunity for members of Ascension to reach out to friends, neighbors, and co-workers, to include them in the mission and introduce them to our church family. Teens who are 14 or 15 are welcome to accompany their parents, and participate with some restrictions, and 16 - 17 year old teens can participate fully, if a designated guardian accompanies them.
Please take a look at these pages for additional information regarding Katrina's impact to Mississippi and the Church of the Ascension mission plans.
