World Bank Shorinji Kempo
Branch Membership
Here are biographical notes about some of the members of the branch.
Kenichi "Ken" Ohashi,
5th dan, Branch Master Emeritus
Ken Ohashi founded the World Bank branch, and remains its senior
instructor. He practiced Shorinji Kempo at the renowned Tokyo University,
and later founded the branch at Cornell University. After moving to Washington,
he founded the World Bank branch in 1979.
Allen Liff, 4th dan,
Branch Master
Allen began Shorinji Kempo with Ken Ohashi at Cornell. He has
practiced the art since 1978, and has made many trips to Japan for further
study. As the primary Shorinji Kempo instructor for the World Bank branch,
Allen leads most of the work-out sessions with a distinctive energetic and
light-hearted style. The picture at left shows Allen beginning an attack
in an embu presentation at the 1992 Cornell Camp seminar.
Neal
Ziring, 3rd dan
Neal began practicing Kempo at the Bell Labs branch in New Jersey,
back in 1989. He has attended many seminars and Taikai events, and
sometimes lead practice. Neal maintains his own personal Kempo pages.
David Yuravlivker,
2nd dan
David has been a member of the World Bank branch since 1985 (?).
During that time he has attended several seminars, and been a steady supporter
of the branch.
Azedine Ouerghi, 1st dan, Branch administrator
Azedine began his study of Shorinji Kempo with Aosaka-sensei in
Paris in 1981. After several years' neglect, he re-started practice with
the World Bank branch in 1994. He is a strong supporter of the World Bank
branch, and occasionally leads practice sessions. As the membership director,
Azedine is also happy to answer phone calls and email messages with questions
about Shorinji Kempo. His phone number is 3-7531.
Ana Bos, 1st kyu
Ana began practicing with the World Bank branch in 1993, and worked
steadily to reach 1Kyu. After a few years hiatus, she has again taken up
the dogi and began practicing.
Mariángeles Sabella,
3rd Kyu
Mariángles began studying Kempo in 2000, not long after
joining the fearsome World Bank legal staff. She attended her first
(unofficial) seminar this year, and is eager to improve her Shorinji technique.
Jeff Carrera, 3rd Kyu
Jeff began practicing with the World Bank Shorinji Kempo club
in 2000, and has worked steadily to improve his technique. Despite
the crushing pressures of his job, he comes to class periodically and continues
to make progress.
Zena, minari
The mysterious Zena began practicing in 2002, and (prior to a
long vacation) made rapid progress. Will she return? Watch this
page and see...
