A thirty-eight year submarine career in the US Navy gave Vice Admiral "Yogi" Kaufman a start of a second career as a photographer and writer. Working with his son, Steve, their photos appear in numerous magazines and books worldwide, and have been prominent in corporate ads, brochures, and reports (over 150 corporate clients alone to date). In recent years he and Steve have completed two submarine coffee-table books: SILENT CHASE - SUBMARINES OF THE U.S. NAVY (publ. Thomasson-Grant), and SHARKS OF STEEL (publ. Naval Institute Press). The latter book is a companion book to the Discovery Channel TV Emmy-winning submarine documentary by the same title.
Our files contain all classes of modern U.S. subs except the new Seawolf - - even the Russian TYPHOON - - and the new class of Japanese diesels. Over 50,000 images of submarines, support ships, action and life aboard were made in these efforts. Both books are available at the U.S. Naval Institute.
