Hayth Family Notes

Lt. Edmund (Edward) Pendleton Hayth was born January 25, 1827 in Springwood, Virginia, Botetourt County, and died March 20, 1893 in Fincastle, Virginia. He married Ella Nora (Mae) Shafer March 7, 1865 in Botetourt County, daughter of John Shafer and Susan (Wingar.) She was born February 16, 1847 in Springwood, Virginia, Botetourt County, and died on December 26, 1899, in Clifton Forge, Virginia.
He was a farmer and served in the Second Virginia Cavalry. He was also a builder and surveyor of bridges. At one time he lived in Buchanan, Virginia.
While serving in the Second Virginia Cavalry, he was shot. He got his foot caught in his stirrup and was dragged until he broke free. The man next to him saved him by stuffing a silk handkerchief into a deep wound. His horse was shot out from under him during the battle at Gettysburg.
He was a builder of bridges. Stories have it that he was a sleepwalker and would walk the bridge trestles. The boys would follow him to make sure he was alright, but wouldn't wake him for fear of him falling.
He was married by Reverend Peter Schickel, a Lutheran minister. When he married, he was a carpenter. His first name has been spelled Edmund, Edmond, and Edward.
He is buried at Copps Cemetary, Springwood, Virginia. I have visited this cemetary and will post pictures of the markers soon.
Ella was given two slaves for a wedding present. She died December 26, 1899 and is also buried in Copps Cemetery, Springwood, Virginia.

Children of Edmund and Ella:

Charlotte Hayth married Henry Cahoon.

Henry Smith Hayth was born in Springwood, Virginia and married Ida Brooks. He was a bridge constructor.

Joseph Peter Hayth worked on the railroad.

Nannie Lee Hayth was born November 9, 1865, Virginia and died February 15, 1944. She first married Frances Lipes. She then married William T. Hayth (her second cousin.) William was born February 19, 1866 and died on February 18, 1944. William and Nannie are buried in Copps Cemetery, Springwood, Virginia.

William Barnett Hayth was born August 13, 1866, in Botetourt County, Virginia. He married Della Irene Gillespie.

John Edward Hayth was born May 4, 1868 and died October 31, 1909. He married Lucy E. (Lee) Calhoon. Lucy was born in 1867. In a will dated October 28, 1909 (Will Book 1, page 367, filed January 4, 1910,) John gives his wife the farm known as the "Ella N. Hayth farm" situated on the Whiskey's Mill and Springwood Road. His birth was either May 4, 1868 or May 20, 1868. He died of heart failure.

Mary (Mollie) Sue Hayth was born on September 10, 1870 in Botetourt County, Virginia and died January 24, 1970 in Blacksburg, Virginia. She married George Milton Shafer on November 28, 1895, in Springwood, Virginia. George was born on January 25, 1867 in Blacksburg, Virginia and died on April 19, 1935 in Blacksburg, Virginia. Mollie was a redhead until she had typhoid fever and lost all her hair. When it grew back, it was black/brown. She could let down her hair and almost sit on it as it was so long. When George and Mollie were first married and Mollie went visiting, she would use a horse and buggy to get places. Before she married she use to stay with an uncle who owned the Hayth Hotel in Fincastle, Virginia. She also visited an aunt in Buchanan. The aunt was the one who bought her all her wedding clothes.
After her husband died she lived with her daughters, dividing her time among them. In the late 1940's and early 1950's she stayed most of her time with her daughter Mary Ella Taylor. She favored purple dresses and wore black heavy shoes. She always carried a lovely handkerchief with her at all times. She never cut her hair and it was still beautiful when she died.
George worked a number of jobs. His job when he married was working for the railroad. He was also a farmer, worked in a broom factory, and worked in a merchandise store. It has been told that he attened VPI college supposedly the first year it opened (it was probably the Agricultural College.) He was one of thirty-seven students to attend VPI that year. They were married on Thanksgiving by Rev. William Cline at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springwood, Virginia. George owned a hotel in Graham, Virginia and took Mollie there as a bride. Their oldest son was born in Graham. Later George took over his father's farm on the outskirts of Blacksburg, Virginia. Nell and Anne were born on the farm. After they were born, George and Mollie moved to Blacksburg and started a broom factory. It burned down and George went in the grocery business with his brother Frank Henry Shafer.
George Milton was listed as George JM Shafer in his guardian bond of 24 February 1874. He is buried in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg, Virginia.
