World of Coal Ash Conference Our major partner, the Maryland Power Plant Research Program (PPRP), engages the WMRC&D for the purpose of conducting field, laboratory and literature research on the characteristics and uses of ash from coal-burning power plants. Every two years, the University of Kentucky at Lexington, Kentucky, hosts the World of Coal Ash Conference which provides a forum for government, industry and academic leaders from all over the world to present research findings, discuss common regulatory issues and share industrial experiences related to coal ash from power plants. In 2005, two of the WMRC&D staff attended the conference and presented material of interest to the conference attendees. A research paper on "Massive Use of Coal Ash to Restore Disturbed Hydrogeology," was presented as well as a poster on commercial uses of coal ash and the sources of coal for Maryland coal-fired power plants. These papers were coauthored with other RC&D partners involved in studying coal ash and its potential uses. These partners were from the PPRP, the Geospatial Research Group at Frostburg State University, Environmental Resources Management and the Maryland Environmental Restoration Group. Attending this international conference gave our staff the opportunity to showcase some of the work the WMRC&D performs for the PPRP. It also provided a great opportunity for our staff to meet others involved with the same issues and to learn what they are doing that may be useful in our own efforts to find beneficial uses for this waste product.
