Edith J. "Patsy" Picken, 84, a champion figure skater who became a judge at skating competitions, died Nov. 19 of cancer at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. She lived at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg.
Edith Kellogg Jones was born in Rockville and grew up there and in Washington. She graduated from the Holton-Arms School and later from a finishing school in New York. She worked as an interior designer for several years.
Mrs. Picken began figure skating when she was 13 and competed at the local, regional and national levels. In 1945, she and her ice dancing partner, Walter "Red" Bainbridge, were national champions in what would now be the junior competition.
They were the first national champions from the Washington Figure Skating Club, which Mrs. Picken joined when it was formed in 1937. She was the club's test chairwoman for many years, serving as a judge of skaters' development.
After completing her career in competitive skating about 1950, Mrs. Picken became a judge at skating events. She served at local, regional and national competitions and, in recent years, specialized in synchronized skating events.
She and her husband, who was also a figure skating judge and official, were delegates of the Washington Figure Skating Club to national meetings of U.S. Figure Skating Association.
Mrs. Picken lived in Chevy Chase for more than 50 years before moving to Asbury Methodist Village two years ago. She enjoyed playing bridge and continued to judge skating competitions until shortly before she died.
Her husband of 51 years, Edward Picken, died in 2002.
Survivors include two daughters, Edith D. Picken of Catonsville, Md., and Dena E. Picken of Germantown, Md., a sister, Bettina Curtis of Gaithersburg, Md.; and a brother, Edmund L. Jones Jr. of Greenwood, S.C.
