We are a Cadette/Senior Girl Scout Troop located in Randallstown , Maryland. We have approximately 10 girls and love to craft, camp and share with other Girl Scouts. We are always looking for new things to do.
TRIP
This past Memorial Day weekend we went on an overnight trip to New York City. We had a wonderful time and beautiful rooms at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square (great rates too!- we brought them a case of Thin Mints). On the day we arrived, we saw the view from the Empire State Building , had dinner at Hard Rock Cafe and saw the Broadway show "Annie". Hard Rock Cafe was especially nice to us , announcing that we we visiting from Baltimore and dedicated "YMCA" to us, taking the girls by the hand singing and dancing through the restaurant. They were delighted, to say the least. "Annie " proved to be full of surprises too, since we were able to move our seats up to the front. After the show we were able to capture the autographs and pictures of many of the young performers at the stage exit. Sunday was a rainy day, but we enjoyed breakfast together and free time to shop and sightsee in small groups. Some of us visited St. Patrick Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, and FAO Schwartz before heading home.
Two years ago, our troop took a trip to Savannah and stopped at Kings Dominion on the way home. That was quite a memorable trip.
SILVER PROJECT
The first Saturday of September , three of our girls earned their Silver Award by putting together a Brownie Recruitment Day. The entire experience was very enlightening for them. They had to obtain food, paper and space contributions , in addition to publicizing the event. They put out posters and flyers throughout the community businesses and schools and held the event with no real idea of how many girls might show up.
They were able to hand in to our community and council the names of about 25 girls who very much want to locate a Brownie troop, as well as 1 Cadette age girl, and 4 adults who signed on as considering leadership.
The event covered activities from seven Try-Its , an opening and closing, songs, games , a bookmark service project for Meals on Wheels, snacks, swaps and handouts.
The future Brownie parents were visibly impressed, as were we the leaders.
They all managed to put in well over the required amount of hours, and now it's just a matter of processing the paperwork.
SILVER PROJECT IN THE WORKS
Currently 3 girls are working on their Silver Award Project in conjunction with Johns Hopkins Children Center. The hospital was very excited and interested in our project idea. The girls will be dividing responsibilities and providing the center with prepackaged activity kits , bulletin board designs and supplies, party goods for birthdays and holidays. They are soliciting donations and or money from local businesses and their goal is to area at the center with 2 Suburbans filled full of supplies in April. They are knee deep in comic clipping (to provide comic books), magazine clipping (for individual collage kits ) and paper cutting (envelope ends for stamped book mark supplies). They hope to interest some other troops in our community in supplying some addtional activity kits.
SERVICE
We are a troop who is constantly on the lookout for service projects.
Last year we collected new and gently used books for a reading project at a local hospital and collected personal hygiene items to give to a shelter for women and children. We also stapled MADD ribbons, collected food for the local food pantry, participated in a "Save Our Streams" project, and did some tray favors for Meals on Wheels.. We are continually collecting Betty Crocker coupons for a local nursing home that turns them in for various equipment and supplies.
WHAT'S NEXT ?
We have another 3 girls starting on their Silver Project, and 2 other girls beginning their prerequisites for the Gold.
We went cabin camping the first weekend in October. The trip was a great success. We made beaded geckos, and tie dyed shirts with a folding technique using fabric paints. The girls got so excited they dyed socks and long johns! We had an eyecatching clothesline!! We also took time out to do some bridging requirements with a neighboring troop. The seniors used that time to start on their challenge.
This month- January- we are busy with the final preparations on a camping skills workshop to be done for a sister Brownie troop next week.
