The large and well-known
publishing houses work almost exclusively with agents, and many will not look at a fiction
manuscript or nonfiction book proposal that is not submitted by an agent. The
average publishing house is dealing with an overwhelming number of fiction and
nonfiction submissions. A publishing house editor's main job is to keep in
close contact with a group of agents, letting them know what kind of books the
editor is looking for, and getting them used to that editor's taste.
