Chris Athey is a deputy sheriff with the
Loudoun County (VA) Sheriff's Office. Hired in 1984, he has served in numerous
capacities - patrol, investigations, warrant squad, SHOCAP
(Serious Habitual Offender Comprehensive Action Program) and is currently
assigned as a sergeant in the Civil Enforcement Unit.
As Vice President of VCOPS, Chris' main function is to assist with lobbying efforts in Richmond. Specifically on those bills designed to improve the working conditions of the line level deputy sheriff in Virginia. He desires to see full passage of theDeputy Sheriffs' Procedural Guarantees Act. Currently, deputy sheriffs in Virginia have no rights regarding their employment - they are hired and fired at the will of their sheriff. The Procedural Guarantees Act provides a guaranteed grievance procedure similar to that given to Virginia's police officers in 1978 (Police Officers' Bill of Rights).
As President of the Loudoun County Law Enforcement Coalition, Chris assists deputies with concerns over salaries, Workman's Compensation, disciplinary matters, and other issues affecting their welfare. Additionally, Chris publishes a quarterly newsletter for the deputies, which focuses on those issues. Chris may be contacted at:
