Global Broadband Wireless: LEO System and Services

Sponsored by Teledesic

Course Description

This four-day course presents an overview of the end-to-end business of producing a global broadband wireless communication network using Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellites covering technical, business and regulatory aspects. The program will include an introduction to Teledesic that will address the technical program, marketing strategy, and business plan. Technical seminars on the LEO system will cover such topics as satellite technology, communication systems, and satellite production. For example, one session will explain how high volume manufacturing principles are being applied to the traditionally "craft" satellite industry to make the production of large LEO constellations economically feasible. There will be a session which addresses the broad scope of services provided to customers by a LEO system. The principles of the Teledesic Network will also be discussed including Quality of Service (QoS) levels, adaptive routing, low delay and bit error rates, and bandwidth on demand, along with the architecture necessary to provide these services. The customer interface to the LEO network—the User Equipment—will be examined as well. The course will conclude with two additional challenges faced in LEO system development: regulatory issues and launch logistics.

Teledesic will host participants in Bellevue, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. Classes will be held at Teledesic. Time will be allotted for the exploring of the City of Seattle and scenic Pacific Northwest environs.

Participant Learning Objectives

As telecommunications operators and regulators, participants will learn how to broaden the scope and reach of services using broadband wireless LEO satellites. They will also gain a working knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of the development of a global satellite communications network, from inception to implementation.
