Building and Managing the Network in an Internet and Wireless World–Developing Utility Grade Infrastructures for the Network of the Future.
Sponsored by The Hewlett-Packard Company (HP)
Course Description
Internet and wireless technologies are re-shaping the public network. Wireless technology, the Internet and so-called Next Generation networks will require that service providers rethink how they build and manage their network infrastructure. This new infrastructure will require that service providers review everything from how service is provided and planned, to how it is sold and supported. This seminar will equip participants with the knowledge that they need to help their organizations prepare for this New World.
In this New World, service providers will have to constantly re-think most processes within their operation to provide better efficiency and quality. The computer industry has faced this challenge for many years as rapid technological change has forced companies like HP to constantly re-evaluate processes while improving quality and customer satisfaction. As part of the course, participants will get an introduction to the basic principles of quality and examples of how HP has successfully incorporated these principles into day-to-day business operations. The participants will experience these principles in action via extensive hands-on exercises.
As our use of communications services moves from one centered on voice to one centered on data and multimedia, the architecture of the communications network will change to one that is dominated by technologies that are optimized for data and can accommodate voice. The course will provide an overview of this change and the technology behind it. The course will examine how the Internet will fundamentally change the structure of the public network and the services the network provides. The challenges of building a utility grade service using this new infrastructure will then be discussed.
The course will also include an extensive discussion on the new services that are made possible by this new infrastructure. The course will include an e-Commerce tutorial and a discussion of recent developments in e-Commerce. The course will also discuss e-Services, the next chapter of the Internet, where the internet model shifts from a web centric model, to one where there are multiple types of connection points to the internet and where the internet performs more of the work for the end user.
The use of wireless technology is exploding. Wireless was the first service to see competition in most countries and the continued growth of the use of the cellular phone has been extraordinary. Wireless technology is also seeing widespread use to provide fixed services. The course will overview current trends in the use of wireless technology. The unique deployment and network management challenges of wireless technology will then be discussed. Finally, mobile e-Services, which represents the next wave of the wireless revolution, the wireless Internet, will be discussed.
Lecture, discussion, and hands-on demonstrations will cover the subject areas.
Participant Learning Objectives
Participants should be able to: (1) understand the forces that are driving the changes in the public network and the challenges of dealing with a rapidly changing environment; (2) describe the structure of the evolving public network of the future that is based on Internet and wireless technologies, the issues raised by this new emerging infrastructure, and strategies to provide a utility grade network in this new environment; and (3) make informed decisions and take a disciplined approach to the planning, acquisition and implementation of existing and emerging technologies in this new environment.
