Tech Crew Training
Sponsored by the Office of the Educational Technology, Training, and Support, Mississippi Department of Education
Course Description
The session will begin with a presentation to illustrate how training was constructed for the Tech Crew members (high school students) that are participating in a TIIAP grant, Connect-2-Tomorrow. After the presentation, the 5 Tech Crews will demonstrate various training they went through to be classified as a Tech Crew. The audience will be divided into groups and as a group will visit each table for 50-minute intervals with 5-minutes in between each session. Listed below are descriptions of the activities that may be conducted at the tables. Each Tech Crew will discuss how their Tech Crew was organized and the various training they received and assignments they were given during their Apprenticeship and Journeyman status. We will have hand-outs for the audience concerning the Tech Crew training.
Table I: Terminating and Punch downs for Cat5
Using Cat5, they will demonstrate how to terminate wire ends and test the wires once they are terminated. They will explain how and why they pulled Cat5 wire during their NetDay and other wiring projects. Participants will be allowed to crimp and test Cat5 wire. Using a patch panel and wall, they will demonstrate how to punch down Cat5 at each end and then test for connectivity. They will describe how they used this to wire their school district and other school districts. Participants will be allowed to punchdown Cat5.
Table II: NetDay
Discuss and illustrate how they organized and implemented NetDay in their school district and as a requirement of the training. They will describe their activities and what is being done with the wire they pulled. Participants will be encouraged to share experiences and ask questions. NetDay material will be distributed.
Table III: Web Page Development and Telecommunications
Participants will be shown how each Tech Crew created district web pages and electronic portfolios. They will also be introduced to the training the Tech Crews offer with e-mail and the Internet to teachers in their school districts.
Table IV: C-U-SeeMe
They will establish a video connection with the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, MS. They will explain how Internet Video Conferencing will be used to connect hospitalized students back to their school districts and to each of the Tech Crews. Participants will interact with hospitalized students as well as see how this technology can be of assistance for students that are hospitalized for long term stays.
