Satellite Uplinking of Educational Television and Multimedia Services

Course Description

Participants will work side-by-side for two weeks with SCOLA experts and technicians in hands-on involvement with all the multimedia aspects of SCOLA satellite transmissions of television and other services to over 7,000 schools, including colleges and universities throughout North America. The various departments and operations are: (1) liaison with television news producers in 40 principal countries; (2) downlink and preparation of "live" and taped programs for transmission, e.g. standards conversion, etc.; (3) relations with affiliates: schools, school systems, state education offices, colleges, universities, cable systems, government education agencies, and businesses; (4) coordination of media services via satellite: courses, lesson plans, printed materials, data via Internet, translations, closed captioning; and (5) hands-on operation of three digital compression channels on Galaxy 4 satellite.

Participant Learning Objectives

To be able: (1) to duplicate the SCOLA learning resources delivery system via satellite anywhere in the world; (2) to create analogous learning systems appropriate to any learning environments; (3) to operate the SCOLA multimedia system in all its aspects: uplinking, downlinking, transmission, educational materials preparation including interactive participation in courses via satellite; and (4) to duplicate the educational, engineering, and business elements of the operation in other countries.
