Digital Switching Concepts and Applications

Course Description

This course is designed to give the participants an overview of the digital switching concepts and basic digital theory as applied to Customer Premise Equipment (CPE). The participants will be exposed to digital switching hardware and peripheral functions as deployed in the PBX. Special applications such as voice mail and interactive distance learning will be reviewed, as well as emerging technologies. Information on Mobile Telephone Exchanges and Personal Communications Systems will be provided. Finally, the participants will be exposed to information transfer techniques.

Participant Learning Objectives

To be able to: (1) explain in general terms the analog-to-digital conversion process; (2) identify the hardware components of a digital switch; (3) explain the concept of distributed call processing; (4) identify the factors important in planning a digital network; (5) explain in general terms the steps involved in processing a call through a digital switching system; (6) identify the characteristics of a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) and Mobile Telephone Exchange (MTX); (7) describe the software architecture of a NORTEL digital switch; (8) describe the integration of voice and data into one central control point; (9) identify switch-to-switch transport mediums including fiber optics; and (10) transfer the learned objectives to fellow professionals in the telecommunications industry.
