Internet Public Policy

Sponsored by America Online, Inc.

Course Description

The growth of the e-commerce medium has produced enormous gains for U.S. economic growth, job creation and productivity improvements. As e-commerce grows into a global industry, the potential for developing countries is enormous. AOL will work with USTTI to examine two key aspects of the growth of the e-commerce phenomenon. The first involves a business case study of

the growth of the Internet and the implications for other parts of the economy. The second is a review of the type of regulatory environment that will facilitate the growth of e-commerce and a discussion of which aspects should be addressed by industry and which should be government-led. This work will build upon the successful efforts of existing e-commerce companies to develop self-regulatory mechanisms in the areas of privacy and consumer protection while at the same time exploring what type of government policies are needed to facilitate liberalization in the "architecture" ranging from telecommunications infrastructure, to financial services liberalization to facilitating the growth of small package delivery mechanisms.
