For the first time in our team's history, the
men's squad has won an Arlington County tournament.
Oh, we have won our share of division titles, but we
simply have NEVER been able to go through a whole
tournament without being eliminated. So, it is with
some pride that I report that on Sunday April 2 the
U.S. Exporters blasted their way through tough
competition and captured the 2000 Youth Benefit
Tournament trophy.

Some highlights of the Sunday games include grand
slam home runs by Tom Lindamood and Ed Frank, two
home runs in one inning by Alan Boyd, and Roger
Morse's memorable "Celebrated Double" (Roger stopped
at first base and raised his arms in victory when
he thought one of his hits had cleared the fence for a
home run. Well, the ball actually hit the fence and
rolled back into play, reducing the hit to a common
double. Roger was relentlessly chastised...)

The Marine Corps from Henderson Hall barracks was,
by far, the youngest and most powerful team in the
tournament. They unmercifully crushed all of their
opponents on Saturday, including us.

On Sunday, however, they apparently believed that
our team would fold up and whimper away after
'The Hall' took a 13-5 lead on us after only
two innings of play. Instead of folding, we just
kept plugging away. Before you knew it, we
were in the middle of an honest to Gosh slugfest!

The three home run rule gave the better hitting,
but less powerful, U.S. Exporters team the advantage.
Special recognition must go to our scorekeeper, Pat
Drury, who pointed out an illegal substitution by
'The Hall' and helped derail their last desperate
charge. (Note: Pat Drury was on the bench due to
an injury he suffered in Sunday's first game. We
all hope that Pat will be back ASAP. We need 'ya!)

The lesson that we should learn from this tournament
is the same as the one we learned in a big game last
year: We must never give up, no matter how far behind
we are. Softball is a funny game. Big leads can
evaporate quickly!

TEAM MVP AWARD:

ALAN BOYD

The batting stats and pitching stats are posted! Good job, guys, but remember, THIS IS ONLY PRE-SEASON! THE GAMES WON'T REALLY COUNT UNTIL APRIL 16!--Jay
