When the Free Traders and the U.S. Exporters
enter teams separately into tournaments, it seems
inevitable that the two will face each other.
For the second time in two years, the U.S.
Exporters defeated the Free Traders, taking
a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series that
will be played out over the entire 2003 season.
It must be understood that the Free Traders
were playing undermanned, and were additionally
hampered by the fact that Jay "Mr. Magoo"
Hatfield was forced to play in the lineup.
Missing from the Free Traders squad were
superstars such as Alan Boyd, Alan Schneider,
Aaron Cohen, Jeff Donald, and Kenny Sims.
But such is life...
The U.S. Exporters took a big early lead, but
the Free Traders managed to rally within one
run late in the game. However, the powerful
Exporters strung together a series of hits
and eventually iced the game and eliminated
the Free Traders from the double-elimination
tournament.
The Exporters ended up placing third.
Tom Meldrum wrote: "I stayed to watch the
Exporters game. They really played well the
last half of the game, with a couple of big
innings. They got down quite a bit early, but
fought back and eventually lost by only one
run, with the tying and winning runs on base
when the last out was made in the bottom of
the last inning.
"By the way, I thought Huck did an excellent
job running the team throughout the weekend.
He really took charge..."
Roger Morse on Pat "The Crippler" Drury:
"Ya gotta give him his props for pitching a
No-Hitter. He struck out 3 in that game
including two who were swinging and MISSED
his spitter. Over the whole tournament Pat
had to have booked at least 8 strikeouts
and two more of those 'over-the-limit home
run' outs. Further, Pat, true to his nickname,
collided hard with a batter as Pat beat him
to the bag at first base."
It was good to get outside to run and hit
the ball after having several consecutive
practice dates rained out in the pre-season.
The Free Traders had a chance to wear their
new softball shirts for the first time.
Although it is essentially the same color
as the old jersey, the logo is less cluttered.
The teams now look forward to a combined
effort in the upcoming Early Bird Tournament,
and then to the beginning of the 2003 regular
season!
