Gordon Hawley And Pat Drury MVPs
We are proud to announce that the Spring 2003 Most
Valuable Player award goes to two teammates, Gordon
Hawley and Pat Drury!
Gordon Hawley, the team's leadoff hitter, led the
team in on-base percentage, tied for the lead in runs
scored, and also won the U.S. Exporter's Best Glove
Award for his fine performance at shortstop. Gordon's
quiet leadership on the field and on the bench
stabilized the team despite some mid-season setbacks,
and he earned both praise and respect from his teammates
all season long.
Pat Drury remains invaluable to the U.S. Exporters
as the team's top pitcher and one of the team's most
dangerous hitters. Pat had another exceptional season
on the mound and at the plate. Pat had the second
highest batting average, led the team in walks, and had
the second highest on-base percentage while at the
same time bearing most of the team's pitching burdens.
Congratulations, Gordon and Pat!
John Callahan Top Rookie
On February 3, 2003, Gordon Hawley sent the following
note to U.S. Exporters manager Jay Hatfield concerning
a prospective ballplayer:
"My friend is John Callahan. He was interested in
playing on Tuesday nights with us...He is a great
defensive outfielder and has a good bat--line drives
and good pop-a lot of hustle...If there is room on the
team then I think he would be a perfect fit."
A perfect fit, indeed!
Despite a mid-season injury that pulled John in
from the outfield, he proceeded to lead the team in
several batting categories. His game winning home
run in the bottom of the last inning against the very
tough Cardinal Construction team lifted the team's
flagging morale.
It was quite a remarkable season for a guy who
some of us are beginning to call The Babe!
