September 14, 2001TERROR ATTACK ON PENTAGON
Now It's Our Turn
PRESIDENT BUSH:
DISASTER RECOVERY:
The cowardly attack against the Pentagon
caused the postponement of the games
scheduled for September 11. Obviously,
that was the least of our concerns on
Bloody Tuesday.
At this writing, it is not yet known if any
of our teammates have been injured by the
series of terrorist attacks, and it may take
days before we know for sure.
The terrorists targetted their mayhem upon
centers of international trade, and then on
America's courageous military. Both are proudly
represented by individuals on this little
softball team.
So far I am happy to report that Free Trader
Greg Martin has reported in, and that Scott
St. Clair was reportedly out of town when
the attack took place.
There are others who we will need to account
for, including former teammates who have
moved out of the area. For the moment, we
must offer our prayers.
On a personal note, the attack against the
Pentagon took place about 1,000 yards from
our home in Pentagon City. Laura was at
school and I was in the Commerce Department
building when the reports of the attacks
first came in.
When my office was told to evacuate, I decided
to walk home rather than burden the subway.
I stood on Memorial Bridge and saw the plumes
of smoke billowing from the Pentagon. The area
was cordoned off, so I had to walk all the way
to Glebe Road then double back to make it to my
house.
We are safe and there has been no damage to our
immediate neighborhood. The hijackers apparently
used Columbia Pike as their directional guide
and slammed the jet into the southwest side of
the Pentagon (facing Arlington Cemetery) near
the heliport.
Our greatest fear was that the jet had hit the
commuter bus terminal on the southeast side of
the Pentagon. Had that happened, there would have
been an even more appalling carnage. In a sense,
we got lucky down here this time.
Our hearts go out to the victims of this sneak
attack.
Payback will be a bitch.
I will report more later.
God Bless America.
