We played some big games this fall, but the biggest may have been on September 6 against the tough Nitro team.

Team Hall of Famer John Thompson summed up the game by expressing the belief that the comeback win against Nitro in the second game compared favorably to the most famous game in U.S. Exporters history (Click Here ). According to Thompson, "Callahan's walk-off home run [rivaled] the 1999 game for greatest of all time."

John Callahan won the team batting title, and led the team in RBI. One suspects that if the last two games of the season had not been forfeited to us, Cal may have led the team in home runs, too!

What a great season he had!

On a team made up of defensive stars, the one that shone most brightly this fall appeared when the chips were down and the hardware was on the line. After Kelvin Foreman broke his arm in the Hawks game, the U.S. Exporters struggled to find the right chemistry on the mound. We were fortunate enough to find it in Kevin Niehaus, who came in from the outfield to successfully anchor the pitching staff.

As John Callahan wrote about Kevin during the games against the Cruisers: "With Kevin [on the mound], I think he only threw 2 first pitch balls in a game and a half. Once he had the count in his favor he was able to throw his knuckle ball and they just could not hit it."

"I hate to say it but I'm starting to like pitching," Kevin wrote. "However once my arm gets back to 100%, I don't think I'll want to pitch anymore."

Let's hope he changes his mind!

Does a U.S. Exporters player need to be on the team for one whole year before rookie eligibility expires? Well, the senior management of the U.S. Exporters decided several weeks ago that, for the purposes of the fall 2005 season, we would accept Barry "Bonds" Hargreaves as an extended rookie. This extension made him eligible to receive a "Best Rookie Award" at the end of the fall 2005 season, and Barry responded with a team leading 10 home runs in the fall, and the top rookie honor!
