1) 4/28/09 v. Nitro Metz
Quiet bats and fielding errors. Lost both to a team we should have beaten. Only had 10 players including Corey who was still nursing his sore hammy. It greatly affected his range in the field and he could only jog on the bases. I would have rested him if I had another body. Kelvin had to miss the game because his wife had surgery yesterday. Max went to the hockey game, but Dennis ended up not going and played. Frank is still on the DL with mono. Duffy was stuck in Jersey City. . . which is its own punishment. Kyle is still in Iraq. . .but should be returning in the next couple of days.
Lack of hitting cost us both games. Again, we only scored runs in the single digits. That won’t win many games in this league. We also need the full team to be healthy and show up. Missing tonight were Frank and Jim who remain on the Injured Reserve. Kyle and Corey were out of town. Kelvin and Tim were very late scratches from the lineups. The team we cobbled together played respectably, but the lack of offense is evident. Max returned to the lineup and swung the bat for the first time in 2009. He hit the ball hard and appeared to already be in mid-season form. . .or else he just had a lot of pent up anger he needed to take out on the ball. Chris arrived straight from the office and played the first game in slacks and timberlands. Glen pitched both games walking only one batter in the second game.
The Exporters finally break into the double digits in game 2. Lack of offense has plagued the Exporters at the start of this season as we failed to score 10 runs in any of our first 5 games. We finally broke out of our slump and scored early and often in game 2 putting 14 runs on the board in the first two innings. It was good we scored then because that would be all that we got for the rest of the game.
This week saw the return of Kyle from his assignment in Iraq. He didn’t appear to be too rusty from the desert and went 4 for 8. Max appears to be picking up where he left off last year and is hitting the ball hard. He arrived very late in the first game to pinch hit for Glen. Then in game 2 he hit a 3-run shot over the left field fence. Because of the early games, Dennis and Sean got to battle the sun on the left side of the outfield, but handled it well.
The team returned to more of the good form we have become accustomed to with an impressive 16 - 3 win in game 1 and a come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the seventh inning in game 2 for a 13 - 12 victory.
Glen pitched game 1 which ended with him striking out their cleanup hitter. The game also featured several fine defensive plays by the Exporters. However, our Manager Emeritus, Jay Hatfield, would have been reaching for the Rolaids as the Exporters tallied 4 sacrifice fly balls in the game. I believe I heard Jay say, "It looks like we have some competition on who wants to sing Karaoke."
For game 2, Tim took the mound and overcame some lapses in the field by his defense to notch another victory. These lapses did not include Chris who was forced to perform the splits a couple times at first base to make some outstanding plays including one stretch completing a double play in the infield. The game was tight every inning with the lead changing hands
often. In the bottom of the seventh, down by one run Drew limped to the
plate suffering a variety of ailments. The previous inning, he dove in an
attempted tag on a runner and landed poorly on his shoulder. He wasn't sure he could swing a bat, but managed to slap a single through the infield. Roger followed with a Texas-leaguer to right that fell between 3 players. Dennis then dribbled a ball that slipped through the right side of the infield to score Drew. With runners on first and second, Sean hit a high fly to deep center field. Just as Roger was returning to second to tag up, the fly just went over the reach of the outfielder allowing Roger to motor home for the winning run.
Lost both games by the slaughter rule. We just didn't produce runs.
Still can't win scoring in the single digits. The Cowboys could hit. In
fact they hit 9 balls over the fence. The only good part about that is that
3 of them were outs!
The Bungalow Exporters won both games against the Enjera Hawks on June 23 in the Men’s Tuesday C-1 Division in two very exciting games.
We hit well throughout the lineup and took advantage of an aging Hawks team to turn one double play in game 1 and 3 double plays in game 2. The first three were conventional DPs with grounders to the middle infielders. The last was unconventional. With the bases loaded and no outs, Kyle Dabruzzi (playing 2B) dropped a line drive right near the bag. He picked it up, stepped on second, but a large runner prevented a clear throw to first. Instead, he wheeled and threw to third where Roger Morse tagged the runner. 4 DPs in one night must be close to a record.
Corey Johnson hit two inside the park homers and Werner Ennesser had a monster night going 6 for 6 with two triples.
We won the first game 16-6 and lost the nightcap 15-20. Tim Fratto got hit in the foot by a line drive in the bottom of the first inning of game 2. Glen Maes went in to pitch and Dennis Potter replaced Tim in the lineup. NOTE - for Stugots in game 1, there is a DQ for the 10th batter. He arrived late and they decided to have him leadoff the inning instead of being inserted at the bottom of the order. I had him called out after he took a pitch.
[Jay Hatfield for Roger Morse] The final score for Game 1 was actually 27-19. I missed a run for us in the second inning. Mea Culpa. Glad it didn't matter. Chis Chaisson hit a grand slam home run and Dennis Potter hit for the cycle in that game. The team scored 16 runs in the first inning, then held on to win the game.
Glen Maes was the hero in Game 2 with a single that drove in the winning run in the bottom of the last inning. Way to go!
Since some of you asked, here are the team records that came close to falling last night: most runs scored in an inning (18), and most individual walks in a game (4). 7/21/09 ~ Lost both. Team decided to visit Bungalow between games. I had no one sober for game 2. Let's just say the team should be thankful we don't do karaoke for punishment any more or there would be lots of singing for all the Ks (swinging) that were recorded. Drew Thompson pitched game 2 and walked 5 batters. After 3 innings all of the position changes were made. The season is over.
