Tournament results:
We won our second game. As the home team, after falling behind 7-0 after three and one half innings, we finally scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. We then scored seven in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth, while holding our opponents scoreless after the fourth inning. So we won 12-7.
We got a little break before our third game, and came out with our bats blazing. As visitors, we scored five runs in each of the first, second and fourth innings, while holding our opponents to a total of eight runs over the four innings, with four coming in the bottom of the fourth inning. We scored another run in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom of the fifth, our opponents went on a hitting tear, scoring eight runs to tie the score at 16 after five innings. We scored one run in the top of the sixth, but they scored three in the bottom. We were unable to score in the top of the seventh inning, so we lost 19-17.
I think we achieved our overall objective on Saturday, which was not necessarily to win a tournament, but instead to get in some quality off-season practice and to help get over the end of both teams' regular seasons. Everyone played hard and contributed. With a few exceptions, most of the team hit pretty well. Craig and Huck had spectacular plays, and Ed and Mark made several nice plays at the corners. We were not overmatched by any of the teams we played, and with a couple of breaks could easily have been 3-0 after three games.
MVP's were Craig Parry and Mark Ulrich, with Huck and Pat also making really strong contributions.
I owe Dave Buttner an apology because I was supposed to call him to let him know one way or the other. I got tied up with work and trying to find optic-yellow NSA softballs on Friday evening.
We had 15 players plus me on our official roster, which seemed more than sufficient. We were allowed to bat twelve, so I batted all twelve and kept myself in reserve for injury. I would have pitched if we had continued after the third game because Pat was tired.
