All Star Sports Finale: October 5, 2002

Woodbridge, Virginia

Barry Hargreaves Reporting:

On Sat. 10/5, a combined team of Free Traders and US Exporters competed in the All Star Sports Finale NOVA Men's Class D tournament in Prince William County. This event served as a tune-up for many travel teams competing in national tournaments. Needless to say, the quality of the competition was very high.

In the first game we went up against a combination travel team from Manassas called the Gators. Every player on the Gators could, and did, hit the ball 300+ feet. Chris Huckleberry and Greg Mecher put up valiant efforts chasing missiles around left field. We took that one on the chin and lost 20-4. After being bloodied, both literally and figuratively (Mark Ulrich took a cleat to the face while making a play at third), we staggered into the losers' bracket.

In the next game we faced a team that we had a good chance of beating, the Dawgs (unrelated to the Arlington County team of the same name). Unfortunately, we didn't hit, made a bunch of errors, and the Dawgs chewed us up to the tune of 15-5.

In our final game, we went up against the Gators again. Why did I get the feeling that we were the Vanderbilt of this tournament??? Due to injury we were down to ten players. The team responded with a respectable effort but still lost 23-13.

On the bright side, the weather was nice, Craig was able to talk an over-zealous policeman into giving us a warning for drinking in the parking lot, and I'm sure Laura got some good action photos for the website...
