...although we must share that honor with another team...
Ed Robinson, Arlington League Commissioner, called me on October 30 and confirmed that we are division Co-Champions this fall! So the headlines should read: "HELL FREEZES OVER" or "PIGS SPROUT WINGS AND FLY." Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine that the Fall 1998 U.S. Exporters would finish the season with a record unsurpassed by any other team in the division.
We prepared for the double header on October 27 believing that our opponent, Golfzilla, had a one game lead on us. We were surprised when the field supervisor handed us the standings that showed that our teams were tied with identical 12-4-0 records.
The fine young Golfzilla team handed the old farts of the U.S. Exporters their lunch in the first game, scoring an insurmountable 9 runs in the first inning. The veterans regrouped and fought back in the second game, winning by the huge margin of 13-12 (...a typical U.S. Exporters "landslide").
When all was said and done, the two teams finished the season with 13-5-0 records. The balance in this year's league is evident by the fact that, besides the tie at the top of the league, the second place team finished only 1 point behind the two leaders!
It was an exciting and a hell of a fun season! This is what we enjoy about this game. Congratulations to all of you for a terrific season!--Jay
It seems I joked some time ago that I would sing karaoke at the Foxhole
if we finished in first place this fall--believing that the likelihood of a first place finish
to be so slim that~~well~~I wouldn't have to do it! Indeed, I even agreed that the team could select the song. Oh dear, dear, dear...
And I am a man of my word...
So please enjoy the following (ugh) pictures of the exalted Coach Hatfield performing **live!**
the Bee Gees' vapid 70's disco anthem to a "fevered" generation, Stayin' Alive.
STAYIN' ALIVE...AND PHOTOS TO PROVE IT
Oh, my goodness...How we must embarrass ourselves sometimes, just to keep the troops happy...
