Regular Season Finally Ends!

The end of the regular season is finally upon us, and the U.S. Exporters team has snapped out of its late season funk and played some spirited softball. The U.S. Exporters came from behind to win the first game of the doubleheader thanks to a big last inning "walk-off double" by John Gulisano who knocked in the winning runs. In the second game, the U.S. Exporters decided that after such a long season, it was time to relax and have some fun. And how did we have fun? By putting the team's top utility man, Erik Lundquist, on the mound for the first time in his six year career with our team! Ehem...Well, it was certainly fun for the three straight batters that Erik walked! Also during the second game, Greg Mecher and Chris Huckleberry collided in the outfield after chasing a fly ball, and Greg was ordered to sit out the rest of the game. We wanted to have fun in this game, not kill each other! Whew! In the end, the U.S. Exporters finished the season in fourth place with a 12-6 record. Although the final standings are somewhat disappointing, the team gained a lot of confidence in these games and now looks forward to the post-season tournament!

Chris Huckleberry Is Team MVP!

Kelvin Foreman joined the team at the Bungalow to announce the Spring 2002 team award winners. Chris Huckleberry was elected as the team MVP by vote of his teammates. Chris had an exceptional year. He became the first team "Triple Crown" winner since Mark Prebich accomplished that feat in 1997 by leading the team in home runs, RBI, and batting average. Chris also tied team records for most Plate Appearances (68), At Bats (65), and Doubles (12)! This is also the first time in team history that the MVP has been won by the same person in two consecutive seasons! Congratulations, HBH! Greg Mecher was selected by his teammates as the team's best defensive player this season. As a result, Greg has won this prestigious award for the unprecedented third consecutive time! Only HOFer Joe Wiedorfer, who joined the team at the Bungalow after the evening's games, has won the Best Glove Award more times that Greg. Congratulations, Grasshopper! Finally, Darrell Allen was honored as the team's top rookie of the season. Darrell started in the Free Traders organization in 2001 and was invited to join the U.S. Exporters for the 2002 season. Darrell anchored the tough second base position and made it his own. Well done, Moochie! The tournament pairings will be known soon, and when I have them I will post them. Since we finished in fourth place we will play our first tournament game on Tuesday June 25 at 6:00 at Virginia Highlands #4. We don't know who our opponents will be, but it could be Stuart Grey! Be prepared! The final regular season TurboStats are posted. Batting Stats are HERE and Pitching Stats are HERE
