Rebuilding the Desktop

What it is

There is an invisible file on every Macintosh disk (hard disk or floppy) that track the location of every file on that disk. Over time, this file will (evventually) become corrupted, resulting in loss of system performance and even missing files/icons. Not good.

Fortunately, while the Apple Marketing Department may leave a little to be desired, some bright little human down in the programming section devised a simple way to rebuild this file. Simply restart the computer and hold down the key and the key during the entire reboot process. (See the image below for the location of the keys). It will generate a dialog box saying "Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop of the disk <name of hard disk>?" Just click on "OK" and let the Mac take care of everything.
