THE LEEPER FAMILY ORIGIN
LEIPER SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN THE ORIGINAL SPELLING, OF MY NAME. IT HAS
BEEN SPELLED MANY WAYS OVER THE YEARS.( LEAPER, LEPPER, LEEPHAR, LEPER,
LEPAR, LEPPAR, LEIPPER, LAIPER, LIPPRE, LEAPHAR, LEPPAYR, LEEPER ,LEIPER)
THE NAME LEIPER HAS BEEN PROMINENT IN SCOTLAND AND AMERICA FOR SEVERAL
HUNDRED YEARS. IT HAS BEEN STATED THAT THE NAME IS BELIEVED TO BE FROM THE
FRENCH WHO MIGRATED TO SCOTLAND IN THE EARLY YEARS AND LIVED THERE.
FROM A BOOK BY HARRISON-'SURNAMES OF-(- UNITED KINGDOM')
LEAPER (ENG) MEANS RUNNER, COURIER, DANCER THUS LEAPER (OE-HLEAPERE),
A BOOK BY THE TITLE 'SCOTTISH SURNAMES' LEPPER MEANS A CARRIER
OF THE SCOTTISH BANNER WITH A LEOPARD ON IT.
IN A BOOK BY BLACK,'SURNAMES OF SCOTLAND', LEAPER, LEIPER AND
LAIPER IS FROM (OE-LEAPERE,) A BASKET MAKER. A LEAP WAS A BASKET MADE
FROM RUSH AND SEDGE. JOHANNE LEPER WAS A BURGESS IN EDINBURGH 1189.
WALTER LIPPERE WITNESSED A CHARTER OF TURRIFF IN 1272. PATRICK LEPER WAS
BURGESS IN EDINBURGH IN 1368. ANDREW LEPAR WITNESSED AN INSTRUMENT OF
CONCORD BETWEEN THE BISHOP OF ABERDEEN AS DID JOHN DE FORBES IN YEAR 1391.
ALEXANDER LEPAR WAS AN ADMITTED BURGESS OF ABERDEEN IN 1408. WILLIAM LEPAR
IN 1487. ALAN LEPPAR WAS BURGESS OF PRESTWICK IN 1507.(ME - AF LEPRE)
LEIPER -1711 - LEIPPER - 1608.
IN A WORK OF GENEALOGY 'THE THOMAS BOOK' THERE APPEARS A SKETCH OF A
LEIPER FAMILY. IT SAYS THAT ACCORDING TO FAMILY TRADITION, A THOMAS LEIPER
LIVED IN STRATHAVEN, CLYDESDALE, SCOTLAND ABOUT THE YEAR 1700. HE IS SAID
TO HAVE BEEN DESCENDED FROM A FRENCHMAN, WHO CAME TO SCOTLAND DURING THE
YEAR 1561, IN THE SUITE OF 'MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS'. HE WAS MARRIED TO HELEN
HAMILTON OF KYPE. THEY HAD THREE SONS WHO ATTENDED THE UNIVERSITY OF
EDINBURGH AND AFTER GRADUATING* THEY CAME TO AMERICA. ANDREW LEEPER BECAME
A LEADING SURGEON IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, WHERE HE DIED DURING.1798. JAMES
LEEPER WENT TO MARYLAND AND MARRIED A SISTER TO GOVERNOR SMALLWOOD. THOMAS
LEEPER SETTLED IN PHILADELPHIA AND BECAME A LEADING CITIZEN THERE.
DURING THE EARLY YEARS BETWEEN SEVENTEEN AND EIGHTEEN HUNDRED THERE WERE
MANY LEEPERS LIVING IN PA., VA., TENN., AND N.C. IN RECORDS OF AUGUSTA
COUNTY, VA. COURT HOUSE THE NAME ISABELLA LEEPER APPEARS FREQUENTLY. HER
RELATIONSHIP IS NOT KNOWN BUT AS THE POPULATION BETWEEN 1750 AND 1755 WAS
SPARSE, IT HARDLY SEEMS POSSIBLE THAT TWO FAMILIES OF THE SAME NAME TO BE
LIVING THERE AT THE SAME TIME, NOT BE RELATED. IT SEEMS THE LEEPERS, LONGS
AND THE YOUNGS MOVED TO TENNESSEE THERE-AFTER, AS THEIR HISTORY RUNS PARALLEL
DURING THOSE PIONEERING DAYS , AND THEY INTERMARRIED SEVERAL TIMES.
THERE WAS A LEIPER FAMILY WHO DID LIVE IN DOWN COUNTY, IRELAND. IT IS SAID
TO BE THE HOME OF AN ALLEN LEIPER BORN DURING THE YEAR 1720. HE WAS KNOWN
TO HAVE BEEN IN PENNSYLVANIA DURING THE YEAR 1744.

HISTORY OF GASTON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Printed - 1939
Pertaining to the Leepers
Robert Leeper was one of the first known settlers near the river
junction of the Catawba river and South Fork area, known as the
point. His earliest grant of land was for 350 acres on March 31, 1750
It is known that he was here before that time. During the succeeding
five years, he obtained other grants in the same locality which gave
him a large acreage. He also had other tracts of land in other parts
of the county.
Robert Leeper and James Kuykendall came to this area about the same
time. Except for the Indians, they had the point mostly to themselves
At times the peaceful nature of the Catawba Indians was not under-
stood by the white settlers. They had not been there long enough to
know that they sometimes would rob but rarely ever killed a white
person.
The Cherokee Indian tribes were hostile and often raided and plund-
ered the territory, occassionally committing murder. As a protection
Robert Leeper, James Kuykendall and two others built a fort and a
stockade at the junction of the South Fork and Catawba Rivers. It
was on the left bank of the South Fork near a neck of land called the
point where the rivers met.The rivers formed two sides of the tri-
angular fort. The site of the fort attracted other settlers to the
location because of the protection it offered. . (As of now all this
lot of this area is covered by water from the Duke Power Development)-
1980)
Killian and Leeper Creek formed Dutchman Creek, then called Dutch
Buffalo Creek on the Lincoln Gaston County line.
John Armstrong was also a pioneer in this section called Gaston. He
obtained a grant for 350 acres of land, August 30, 1753, on the
Belmont side of Armstrong's Ford now called Armstrong Bridge.
James Armstrong, on the same date obtained a grant of 229 acres of
land at Beaver Creek Dam. Two years later he obtained a grant near
John on the South Fork.
Martin Armstrong was also another one of the earlier settlers at the
fork.
James Leeper a nephew of Robert Leeper was one of the Catawba River
pioneers. Settlement date is unknown but a grant from King George III
was enrolled in the office in Wilmington, on April 8, 1765 for a
tract of land on the west side of the river, now Gaston County of
our Province of North Carolina, joining his own planation on begin-
ning. Survey of the plot was by McKnitt Alexander a (Signer of The
Declaration of Independence ) The above proves that James Leeper
owned and did live on the Catawba before the grant was made.

Pruett Book
An older grant in the same locality was made to Frederick Hambright
dated April 23, 1762 joined the west side of the river. It was near
the Leeper land and was later sold to him (150 acres). James Leeper
also bought 200 acres of land from John McElnary for which he obtained
a patent in 1762.
South Point Township was one time known as Leeper land.
Nicholas Leeper, nephew of Robert Leeper and older brother of James
Leeper came to the point several years later than his Uncle Robert
Leeper. He obtained a grant of land (190 acres) on the Catawba River
April 23, 1762. The date is the same as the date Frederick Hambright
was granted land that he sold afterwards to James Leeper. This would
make the two Leepers close neighbors. Nicholas Leeper is said by Mrs.
Pruett,to be the ancestor of many of the Leepers now living in Belmont
Matthew Leeper born May 27, 1755 was the son of James Leeper, the
pioneer and owner of several large tracts of land on the Catawba river
Matthew was a Revolutionary soldier. His home was near the Leeper
Gold Mine. He had two sons Matthew and James. The elder,Matthew Leeper
died October 12, 1849 at the age of 95. Son Matthew Leeper being
the eldest inherited the lands on the death of his father. He later
deeded 300 acres of land to his brother James Leeper. Location of
this land was two miles south east of Belmont, tho the plantation
extended farther down the river. The old home place of Matthew Leeper
is still standing near what for years was known as the Leeper Gold
Mine. (This information written 1939) A. veteran of the Battle of
Kings Mt. he is buried in the Old Smith Graveyard near Belmont.
Matthew Armstrong married Margaret Shipley Sloan of Mecklenburg County
He was born in 1762 and died June 21, 1838. Matthew,a Revolutionary
soldier was the son of John Armstrong. He obtained a grant of land
350 acres on the Belmont side of the Catawba River, South Fork,
August 30,1753, It was located at Armstrong's Ford, now Armstrong
Bridge. The home on the right hand side of the road toward South Fork
was built of massive logs that are still preserved in the barn on
the farm of the late Jasper Armstrong. Matthew also fought in the
Battle of Cowpens.

EARLY HISTORY OF BELM0NT AND GASTON COUNTY
NORTH CAROLINA
The Atlanta, Charlotte Airline Railway now a part of the Southern
Railway was built in 1871-1872 The station was named Garibaldi.
The first mercantile establishment was situated where Mrs W.A. Leeper
now lives, and there was a grocery store and a saloon combined.
Mellon and Gullick firm was opened in the 1880's. Mr. Neal Mellon
died in 1887 and the interest was bought by John F. Leeper and W.A.
Leeper. The firm was run under the name of Leeper and Gullick Company
Later on the store was sold and the building rented out to different
firms until it burned down in 1902.
Newspapers were distributed from Gallants store located at John F.
Leeper's place on the South Point Rd. where the Gaston family now
live.
Gold mining was the largest operation in all the area around Charlotte
until the Califormia Gold Rush. There was considerable mining here
before the Civil War, and some years later. The LEEPER GOLD MINE was
considered a rich mine and was worked more than a hundred years.
A Robert Leeper was one of the first known settlers in the point on
the Catawba River. His earliest grant of land 330 acres was issued
