6, p 23. HEZEKIAH ALEXANDER. 8 Aug 1796, prb in Jul 1801
Ct. Being in declining health, I give to my wf, Mary Alexander, all
that double tract of land whereon I now dwell, the negroes Sam and
Abram, four work horses of her choice, all farming utensils, 12 head
of horned cattle, all sheep, hogs, and poultry, all kitchen and house-
hold furniture necessary to keep the family together during her
widowhood then to sink into my estate; also her bed and furniture,
her mare and saddle, all her dresses, furniture, and the negro Bett.
I give to son William L. Alexander £650 of which sum I
have already paid £500, on his account, into the estate of Thomas
Polk, decd, also the negro man Jack in trust to be equally divided
among his children as he shall think proper at his demise.
I give to son James R Alexander £100 and the title to the
value of a negro girl Mary now in possession of John Parks, Jr., to
whom she was sold by James as my agent.
It is my will that the four tracts I own on McAlpine Cr be
divided into two parts by two or more men selected independently by
my executors, and I give to son Silas Alexander half of the above
division on which he now lives, and the negro girl Ann in lieu of the
property he furnished toward the Mountain Lands. To son
Hezekiah Alexander the other half of the McAlpine Cr lands on
which he now lives.
I give to son Amos Alexander a horse and saddle and £100
to be paid by my two youngest sons to whom I give the land on
which I now five.
The plantation on which I now live, consisting of two adj
surveys, is to be divided into two portions, the choice of one of these
to go to son Joel Alexander as well as a bed and bedding, horse and
saddle. The other half of this division I give to my son Oswald
Alexander, as well as a bed and bedding, and a horse and saddle. It
is my will that Joel and Oswald each pay unto their brother Amos
the sum of £50.
I give to dau Esther Garrison the chest of drawers now in
her possession in trust for her dau Caroline Garrison, and the
negro wench Jean and her three children Leah, Frank, and Nancy.
These negroes are to remain in the custody of Caroline Garrison for
18 years and then divided among her children; should she die before
the end of this period the negroes are to be divided among her
children as her husband thinks proper.
I give to dau Kezia Alexander the negro girl Hannah, a
feather bed and furniture, a bay mare and saddle, a chest of drawers,
six head of cattle, and a silk gown pattern.
I give to sons James R., Silas, Hezekiah, and Amos the
ten tracts I own on the French Broad R on the condition they each
pay into my estate the sum of £25. My executors are directed to sell
as much of my estate not named above as is needed to pay my just
debts, and any remainder is to be divided among my children. Exrs:
Wf Mary and two eldest sons William L. and James R. Alexander.

CODICIL, 28 Jan 1797. In the above will half of my farm
animals were devised to wf Mary during her widowhood, and the
other half is to be disposed of as she directs. The property that my
late beloved dau Mary took with her [unnamed negroes] is to be-
come the property of her husband Charles Polk. Wit: John and
Thomas Davis and Evan B. Bradley.
