Name: Phil DeStefano Referred by: Heard about it on the radio From: East Northport, NY Time: 1998-02-27 16:44:37 Comments: Although I find FUV very refreshing, and I recently became a member.... I must say that I agree with many of the criticisms that are in the guest book. Since there are many entries that are positive, (including this one), and those aspects of the station are obvious, I'm going to write a bit about the 'other' comments. I don't want to be negative, becuase I like the station, and I appreciate the success of a member supported station on the radio.... no commercials and all.... But, it DOES seem you have a play list, since you seem to stick to certain cuts. There was a comment in the guest book from a Fordham student that said, "give the station back to the students"...that got me thinking. Again, I can see both sides of the coin here becuase the current DJ's are good, but where are the students if this is a station connected to the college, (as the name implies).? Also, I'd like to hear more local musicians.... there are sooooo many self promoted CD's out there. I'd like to hear a show just based on musicians from this area. And what happened to Ben Soper? So, there ya go, some good, some not so good. Any feedback from WFUV or other listeners would be great. Thanks, Phil |

I'm really impressed with your listeners' Music Master selections; including folks like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Ella in the mix really rounds things out nicely. Would love to hear a little more traditional folk (Pete, Woody, New Lost City Ramblers, etc). BTW, keep yours eyes open for a new Pete Seeger double CD tribute album due out March 17; includes folks like Judy Collins, Springsteen, Indigo Girls, Ronnie Gilbert, Richie Havens, John Gorka, and many, many others. Before the car was the only place we got FUV. I work at home and care for 2 children so your station is very important to my quality of life!!2) A couple of weeks ago I think it was Meg who was playing some Toni Childs and yearning for a new album to be released. Well on the internet a few months ago there was a posting that Ms Childs had tried out some new music in a concert in San Fran. The review from those in attendance stated that the new songs were as good as those on Union and that an album may be released in March! Unfortunatly I can't locate the address again but there is lots of stuff on Toni Childs. Maybe you all can get the buzz on what is happening!! I don't know where I was when Union came out, but i first heard it on your station and fell in love with her voice and she has become one of my favorite singers. Wouldn't it be great and I know I will hear anything new from you first. Keep up the good work and Thank you. |

Because of the mix he plays on this show, i believe he might be creating new fans for this music - people who might not neccesarily listen to an entire show of it. once they hear the salty dogs or the black eagles or banu gibson a few times they'll be hooked, just like rich and me. Keep it going, Rich.
i don't like the name of the show, Standard Time.
a) too much like "american popular standards" which we
were forced to hear him repeat after almost every
song when he was on the other station. He is so
much more fun to listen to on his home, wfuv.
b) how can a show which plays East Coast Trot, Sage Hen
Strut, Kansas City Kitty, etc be called standard time?
i want more such 'non-standards'.
One request, please. 'whip me with plenty of love' by

Between the extremely limited musical selections offered on most stations and the insulting, patronizing and even perverse radio disc jockeys, I had finally given up and turned to my tape collection for my only musical company while driving. Then I bought a car with a broken cassette player, and while surfing my radio dial one morning on the way to work, I tuned in to WFUV. It was great to hear Darren Devivo's soft voice, and he was actually speaking to the audience as if we were intelligent-I couldn't believe it!! I enjoy the musical selections on WFUV more often than not because the menu is varied and not run-of-the-mill (sometimes I do feel the music is a little lame...), but my absolutely favorite things about the station are the knowledgeable, soft-spoken air-staff. Thank you all for bringing sophistication and class to the airwaves!! |

Found station by accident while searching at work and have not changed the dial since. The mix is unheard of on the other stations and so very much appreciated. Love Meg Griffon. But was very disappointed one day with Rita when Joni Mitchell reguest came thru and Rita said "can't find any non-depressing/upbeat songs by Joni" I couldn't believe she said that! One question, has anything changed with your frequency?? Past few weeks much static interfereing with reception. Heaven forbid if we can't get our WFUV fix. Any chance of ever hearing jazz by Valerie Capers. I think you'd have to dig for this one, but she is worth it. Was out on Columbia lable awhile back. Thanks. |

Listening to WFUV is thought provoking, soothing, exciting and a groove. The diversity of your programming shows that you are sensitive to all of the different kinds of people out here listening. I am a late thirties Mom/photographer from NJ and tune in for several reasons but especially because you paid tribute to the late, great Laura Nyro to whom I was a devoted fanNo ordinary radio station would give that kind of deserved attention to an artist unless they were bringing in loads of advertising dollars. And we all know that Laura and the artists you support aren't peddling NIKE sneaks. That's what makes you guys so cool. Thanks for the Laura airplay in addition to all of the many, many good vibes you spread. Peace, Maryellen |

I decide to join. My only frustration, well really 2 after some songs are beaten to death a la commercial radio (only in much smaller numbers) is that after calling, writing, e-mailing. request-lining and finally donating his 2 cds I've been unable to get NRBQ co-founder "STEVE FERGUSON" guitarist extraordinaire to your attention. Hoping for better luck in 98. No luck even around NRBQ day back in Sept, which was great, and Rainforest Concert in Nov. A radio station where all the DJs and listeners are obsessed with Bob Dylan. I don't mean by merely playing him all the time but embodying his spirit in every song. Bob Dylan is trully extraordinary just like WFUV. P.S. I love Rita Hustens voice. Its like a warm spring rain. Or is it a cozy winter fire? |

I miss it, especially CityFolks. I tune into WFUV whenever I am in listening range and it almost (but not quite) makes me want to live in the NY metro area. What I really like about WFUV is that you folks play music that is not heard on the other stations (Cliff Eberhardt, John Gorka, Jules Scheer, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Rosanne Cash, Shawn Colvin, Susan Werner, Greg Brown). I think you may have gotten a little too conservative and don't play deeply enough into an album, but still, you are so far superior to the other stations in NYC. Thank you so much for making my time in NY bearable and for introducing me to wonderful folk music. |

I just happened to come across it in the car. I saw a bumper sticker for FUV on Rt 17 one day and tried it. I think that was the last time I touched the dial. When I got home I tried to pick-up the station but I got alot of static. Lucky for me, I have a job where I can spend alot of time on the road. You have a mix that you can't get anywhere else. I love the older stuff and I really enjoy the newer stuff (Stuff I would have never known). Keep up the great work. |

(How 'bout bringing the format back??). A friend of mine told me about the CSNY music day you had a few days back, and suggested I listen in. I never thought to try, 'cause I didn't think the station would reach. I was right and wrong. On a good day, with a quartz-lock radio, I can get WFUV. (This is how I found out Meg Griffin was still on NY radio). I like the free-form, which is so appalingly missing on today's FM dial. Just like to say, when the signal reaches out here, I enjoy the station. Any chance of boosting the signal, or relaying it on an unused frequency for the easterner's?? |

FUV proves that art (music) and business (corp. sponsorship and on air plugs from those sponsorships) can be done with style and grace, and not make us (the listener) feel like we are being bombarded by commercials. Along with that and probably most importantly, FUV is one of the only stations to hear new artists-- Thank you |

We just moved to the east coast and your station is my favorite thing about our new home. I have lived in Los Angeles, SanDiego, Kansas City and your radio station is, without a doubt, the best I have ever found. Unfortunately, that is not saying much, since generally radio stations are just the pits. Perhaps it would mean more if I said simply that your radio station is wonderful and stupendous (obnoxious, but really fun word) and I listen to it exclusively and it's just, well, swell. But, um, do you think you could play Iris DeMent and Gillian Welch? A lot? I've never heard them played and I cannot tell you how it would brighten my day to hear them. I am at the library since I am woefully behind the times technically, so I guess you cannot get ahold of me if you would want to for some weird marketing reason. Just know you have another new devoted fan. Thanks for your time, and your station. -Donna Turner Darien, CT |

You could have gotten me a lot cheaper than what you pay for Diliberto's show (plus, I just can't take some of the music quite as seriously as JD does, although he DOES put together an excellent and unique show.) IMO there is still a need for a low energy, "free-form" show that would blend Dar, Bill Evans, gamelan music from java, French Baroque music for viola da gamba, Planxty, Steve Roach, etal. WXPN has a show like this called "Sleepy Hollow" (Chuck knows about it.) I'll raise so much money for you guys that you'll think I stole it. Give me a call.... If I can just tune it in at work (when will you be broadcast all over Manhattan?!?!), life would have a lot more meaning! I'm really finding myself, and perhaps even the meaning of life, in the world of folk music. Your radio station is very fulfilling, because it is like no other. From artists I've seen to those I've only heard of, and even those (obscure?) musicians I've NEVER heard of, everytime I tune to WFUV, it's like opening a new birthday present every day. Thank you. Thank you also for playing my old favorites such as Neil Young, Simon & Garfunkle, etc. On the Sunday City Folk program you played music written by Phil Ochs. Although I am only in my early 30s it brought back memories of my time in camp when we used to sing anti-war songs including several of his. I went out and bought one of his albums. I even set my alarm an hour earlier on weekdays so I can drift in and out to my favorite music (this makes for some very peculiar dreams.) The other great constant is Rita Houston, she more than any other of your DJ's plays more of what I want to hear. Since I play alot of instrumental solo acoustic guitar, I would appreciate hearing more of that style, it should'nt be that much of a stretch. Let's keep the folk in City Folk! |

I'm hearing old stuff that sounds as fresh as it did back then, and new stuff that's light years ahead of the crap they're playing elsewhere. Your dj's love the music and it really comes through, and that makes all the difference. Now for the really big question: is there still a Blarney Stone across the street from the campus on Webster Ave.? I used to go there virtually every Friday night in my student days. |

Yhere really is only one problem-Your station is so addictive( I have it on at work all day) I go through withdrawel on the weekend. Its so bad I have to listen to some other station on Saturdays at work. Couple of suggestions how about a day of solid music and no talking. Its not that I don't like you Dj's but for a change. How about a theme of "hero's of the revolution" singes like Phil Oche's and others who were prominant during the Vietnam War. Play some Phil Oches anyway. Also can you suggest a good music store in my local area The one I used to go to closed.Keep up the great work. |

I've always been a "B-side" person myself and your station stresses the fact that the most played is not always the best. Variety is a wonderful concept and you guys do it to the fullest. Well I got to 90.7 and never left. The music was great. Started out with Tom Waits and just stayed, well, great. Needless to say I tuned in the rest of the stations later, with 90.7 holding the #1 spot on the dial. I would just love it if I could here some Tower of Power on the radio. They are definitely the two coolest women in radio. They know what they are talking about and they have informative, intelligent information to discuss while on air. I find it disheartening in commercial radio to see that there is often a "token" female as a part of radio show and she is always the person who does the gossip news. I haven't seen a woman who is the main part of show around here since I have lived here. Hats off to these two wonderful women in radio! Keep up the great work! Name: Walter Ocner Referred by: Heard about it on the radio From: New York City Time: 1997-11-11 17:38:00 Comments: First of all, Kudos on getting John Platt, who I had the great pleasure of knowing during my time at a traffic reporting service. He is intelligent, warm, knowledgable and a great presence to have on the radio. Having known him for a brief period, I think there is no one better qualified to do the type of show he does. Wish him the very best from me, I hope he remembers. I am disappointed with the dismissal of Ben Soper, who was one of the biggest reasons for my listening to the station. His being unceremoniously replaced with Meg Griffin was not only wrong, but shows a decided lack of intelligence and loyalty to someone who did an excellent job. I know this as a fact. Will WFUV also dump their remaining personalities to attract "star" names, who knows. Meg does not sound at home playing this format as Ben did, and many people I know are turned off to the station. I only hope he is well wherever he is, my understanding is that he took it all very hard. I of course know from experience what it's like to be taken off the air for some asinine reason, and wonder if the station has forgotten what its original aim was. Darren DeVivo and Rita Houston are two of the best things on the station today, and I hope they are at least appreciated. If not for them and John, I would not be a listener anymore. Bring back Ben Soper! |

Name: Larry Cohen Referred by: Heard about it on the radio From: Stamford CT, Princeton NJ, orig. Bklyn NY Time: 1997-11-10 17:28:00 Comments: I discovered WFUV while scanning the dial in my car (I've been making a two-hr. drive on Mon. & Fri. of each week. The intelligence, quirkiness and variety of the programming takes me (a 42 yr. old) back to the best days of WNEW-FM (similar deja vu thoughts shared with Jeff Wurbrand of the Guest Page). I actually LOOK FORWARD to my 2 hour drives, since I can't pick up your station at my home in New Jersey or my apartment in Stamford! Can't you do a hostile takeover of some station in Central Jersey (Princeton or Rutgers' radio)? You also helped me discover relatively obscure artists like Amy Rigby, Dave Bern, etc. and I thank you profusely. My only complaint may be sacreligious, but can't one of your deejays admit that Dylan, who could never really sing, should gracefully retire and spare himself and us further embarassment. Even Sinatra knew when to call it quits. God only knows what was going through the Pope's mind when he heard Bob's inimitable off-key and off-rhythm howling. |

I like to call it an "open attitude", an inherent feature of all National Public Radio outlets, now mixed with eclectic, and soulful music. I can not say I enjoy every piece of music I hear on FUV, but I find I appreciate every piece - for its uniqueness, if nothing else. In my mind one of the best measures of a radio station is how the station influences my selection of music. And you have done that more in the past few months than any, non-classical, station in or around NYC has in the past 25 years around NYC. Thanks, KJV |

My 18 month old is always dancing to whatever is on (except the icky celtic stuff) I only wish the weekend days had more interesting programs--ie city folk, world beat, grateful dead, bluegrass. We totally enjoyed all day halloween DEAD. Maybe this can be an any and all holiday tradition. Please tell people they can boost their WFUV reception with cable radio-its really cheap. |

I constantly read about your station in the daily news radio column and since i am constantly on the road i decided to give a listen. Well I am hooked except for the morning show with Dave I am listening to FUV on a regular basis. Your station is everything NEW used to be and wish it still was, but you fill a niche that the big boys say has no place in NY and boy are they wrong. I love Meg from the old days and she is even better now. I plan on becomming a member as soon as I send this message. Keep up the great work. |

But, I reasoned, One of the things of beauty,WFUV, really needs to crank up it's out-put, so I felt less put out by the eyesore. Best of luck for our next 50 years! |

Name: Anthony Fortunato Referred by: Heard about it on the radio From: Rockaway, NJ Time: 1997-11-06 07:15:00 Comments: This is a long comment, but... I have been a huge Jackson Browne fan since about 1978, and after learning about his collaboration with Warren Zevon on Excitable Boy, I then became a big fan of Warrens. Cut to 1992 - I was in Key West lounging around a pool, and I kept hearing this song called "I Don't Know Why" but had no idea who sang it. Cut to 1993 - My Sister in law was visiting from Portland Maine, and gave me a CD by some woman named "Shawn Colvin". I heard an excellent remake of Tenderness on the Block, but then, at the end was that number from poolside Key West. AHA!!! Needless to say, I was hooked on Shawn. Cut to 1995 - Driving to work one morning, and disgusted with FM radio, and sick of my cassettes, I started scanning the FM dial and heard a staticky Polaroids. WHOA!!! What station is this??? WFUV!!! You played one great song after another and I couldnt get enough (No commercials either!!) You've turned me on to sooo many artists - Dar Williams, Jonatha Brooks, Freedy Johnston, SonVolt, Greg Brown, to name a few. I've even changed the route I take to work so I can receive the signal better. (By the way - are you working on your signal strength?) I am proud to say that today I will be a new WFUV member! |
Name: Mairy Miano Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: NY Time: 1997-11-05 15:34:00 Comments: I had a great time at the station yesterday afternoon. Answered phones during megs' show. How can I get Cliff Eberhardt into my living room? Found the station during a ride home from work. Pure frustration with everything else until the scan stopped on 90.7 I couldn't believe I was hearing Joni Mitchell, and then one more great artist after another. I've discovered more than fifty singer songwriters I never would have heard if I hadn't found WFUV. That was six years ago. Stay on the air forever! |

So Meg was on commercial radio .. so what? Does the music and playlist sound commercial? Of course not! If anything, the addition of Meg has brought even more diversity to WFUV. Adult rock / AAA etc. takes on so many different styles of music, and Meg has brought with her the 'rock end' of the AAA spectrum. Keep on evolving FUV! Lets hope you evolve into a 7 day a week station!! |

I've written to Rich about it--I know he's busy and can't always answer his mail. I'd be happy to send enough blank tapes for several shows, plus a return mailing label and the postage. I started listening to BB in its early days, perhaps before show #100, when I lived in New Rochelle. After returning to PA in 1990, the thing I missed most about NY was BB. I had a friend in White Plains tape shows for me. Then I listened to Rich on WQEW, and when I came home from a 2-month vacation in August, was surprised and heartbroken to find he had left QEW. I'd gladly contribute to the WFUV Fund regularly if I could hear BB again. There's nothing else like it on the radio. BTW, does WFUV broadcast by satellite? If so, I'll put up a dish right away. |

I appreciate that your station is one of the very few, if only, outlets in the metro area for "alternative" music. ( I am tired of having to listen to once great songs beaten to death on the album rock station('s). The supposed alternative stations on the other parts of the dial seem to be more worried about playing mainstreem watered down heavy-rock-punck stuff than good new rock and roll music. Also want to contratulate you on the web-site...easy to use, informative, and great for putting faces with the voices. Keep up the good work! |

It is also nice to hear some commercially popular artists and album cuts from the past(Dylan's "Blood On The Tracks", Joni Mitchell's "Court & Spark",etc.). One criticism--- with your emphasis on singer/songwriters and folk music, I can't believe you don't play more Leon Redbone or The Kinks(circa 1966-1971). |

Name: Cory Pearson Referred by: Net Search From: Lower Manhattan Time: 1997-08-25 10:48:00 Comments: I have listened to WFUV on and off for 20 years but recently your programming taste and mine have really meshed. The wide-ranging mix you have now, across styles, across black and white, across countries, is the best I've heard since, well, I used to do radio back in the '60s and early '70s when you could get away with that more. I've always regretted that radio has become so narrowly segmented--we all lose out when radio (which is only reflecting a segmented society) doesn't broaden your view, teach you the new and remind you of the old. You could add tidbits of jazz in there from time to time. Not CD101 junk (elevator jazz, jazz on 'Ludes), but real jazz: Davis, Mingus, Coltrane, Parker, and the newer, younger experimenters who can add funk, hip-hop and James Brown to be-bop: Greg Osby, Geri Allen, Steve Coleman, David Murray, etc. During the recent focus on India/Pakistan's 50th anniversary celebrations, you could have played John Coltrane's "India," which shows that the American avant-garde jazz musicians travelled to India, dug the music, and put the two together. Keep up the good work, Cory (ex-WVBR/Cornell Univ. and WHFS, Bethesda/Washington, D.C.) incorporated it into their own music |

I have to say that lately I am quite dissapointed in the music, especially in the late afternoon. Meg Griffin just does not seem to fit the style of station and she talks too much. I'm afraid the format is becoming too commercial. I will hang in but I do not like the direction the station seems to be going. |

I'm sure you've been asked this before, but any plans for a live Internet broadcast of the signal via RealAudio? We have a similar station here (WRNR) in Maryland that you can listen to over RealAudio at http://www.wrnr.com - I use it all the time. This would be awesome for all of us not in NYC who are starving for radio options! |

You play both kinds and I think that's great. I listen harder and thanks to you , get to discover (Patty Griffin!), and re-discover music and artists I might've passed over or forgotten. I appreciate the enthusiasm and sincerity of the airstaff and am thrilled to hear Meg Griffin again. Meg is always into the music she plays, even on the commercial stations.Although I do miss Ben Soper's ear catching accent. A couple quick questions: Does the airstaff get paid (a lot)?--What is the silly repetitive talking on the guestbook page--talking about the worms and death? (It sound worse than that John & Yoko wedding album.) Just wondering.--I appreciate all your efforts. Thanks |

I drive from NJ to Soho and the minute I hit the west side highway it gets scratchy and in Soho I can hear truck driver conversations. What would it take to get better reception?? Also, I wonder if you would play Christine Lavin's "Sensitive New Age Guys" Its the funniest song and I haven't been able to find it. That means, when listening in mono (which because of the spottiness of your signal, many listeners have to) the audio almost disappears. The cause of this is likely due to either the recorder or the playback deck. There's an easy way to solve this - when broadcasting pull from either the tape's left or the right channel only and send that to both the left & right channels of the console. This will work since it's the mixing of the tape's 2 channels that causes the problem. Ask your chief engineer about this - but PLEASE do something. |

I am a very long term listener/member. What were you thinking when you put Meg Griffin on the air? The best thing about WFUV was that it was so different from the commercial stations on the air - that the dj's seemed to have a point of view that was interesting - not just babble. It's so depressing to find that everytime I find something good on the radio - sooner or later the station either changes format or decides to become all things to all people. That's usually the invitation to play Stairway to Heaven on your "top songs of all time" holiday specials (like there really is such a thing - other than for your market research). Anyway - if anyone is listening to this - you are alienating members and we pay membership too. |

I missed out on the live recording sessions because my schedule was just too weird--but you had three of my favorites: Keb' Mo', K.D. Lang and Bobby McFerrin. I hope you do it again! Thanks again for all the great music. |

One night after I moved home I was playing with the radio and I heard the familiar theme music of the World Cafe. I programmed the station into my stereo and have been listening to FUV ever since.I am also a fan of Idiot's Delight and Vin Scelsa. Between FUV and Vin I always have something to listen to in the radio wasteland that is New York. |

I'm a big fan of folk music and I first heard of the station when I was at the Newport Folk Festival last year. You play a wonderful assortment of classic folk music that has such a profound influence on today's music, as well as the contemporary artists who are influencing the future. Your programming is by far the most intelligent, inspired, and enjoyable around. I definitely plan to become a member as soon as I can muster up enough money (I am a full time student). Keep up the good work! In a market full of commercial radio that overplays the same songs as nauseam, WFUV is a refreshing change! |

Hmm. But, nevertheless, I love your station, listen to it all the time (but unfortunately this means I have to be in the car as that's the only place I get it!), am a listener, own a tee shirt, got free tix to Paul Winter last winter thanks to you, etc. My very favorite program, bar NONE was the show this past spring when you played "spoken word" and interspersed poetry read by the poets with music. That was THE BEST show ever. My only other advice would be to play more upbeat music in the drive time so that I always get to work with a smile on my face. :) Play more world music! Less Johnny Cash and Steve Forbert (sp?), keep the Djs just as they are - they are very refreshing and nice to hear whatever time of day I tune in. |

I'm not sure how many albums they have out now, but when I saw them in concert four years ago they had three CDs: "Trouble in Paradise", "I thought you'd be taller", and "Be political, not polite". They're gay, and much (but not all) of their music is about that, but they're also good musicians and they do a great live show. I have no connection with them. |

Name: Stefan des Lauriers Website: Music Kingdom Referred by: Heard about it on the radio From: Glen Ridge New Jersey Time: 1997-06-04 23:11:00 Comments: DEFYING THE LAWS OF LITERARY GRAVITY Raconteur Stefan des Lauriers of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, would have you believe the songs on his debut cd “Elevation” defy the laws of literary gravity. Indeed; his so called ‘literary contraptions’ are uplifting, but it is producer and arranger Kevin Picard’s performance that flies with the greatest of ease. “Skywriting! It says I’m wild about you and I’m doing loop de loops.” ‘Walking on Air’ eradicates the need for a willing suspension of disbelief with a single bound. Explaining how the song was thrust upon him Stefan says,“Looking up I saw the writing in the sky, and thought to inscribe my song there, but the sky wasn’t big enough. So I wrote it on a stack of business cards.” The song takes you on a flying circus parade with its ethereal march. “Have you seen the light of freedom.” Using the sun to paint a patriotic picture with a pointed brush; the highest form of literal illumination is achieved in ‘A Miracle America.’ Landmarks are highlighted throughout the course of the day until shadows fill the Grand Canyon, and a rhetorical question is raised. A subtle marching beat echoes the title as brisk acoustic guitar is rendered by Sharky Mc Kuen, guitarist extraordinare. “Making up the galaxy’s face!” The Beatle-like violins and velvety voice of guest artist Miyuki Harley, are like fresh oxygen. It was twenty years ago today that Stefan wrote ‘The Favorite Pony’ sitting on the upper deck of a double decker bus in London. The double entendre rammed into a low tunnel and sheered off the roof, and a clump of his hair. “Years later it occurred to me that the song was about clowning around with the universe.” Metaphoric artifacts are melodic traces of light emanating from a celestial source in ‘Handful of Stars,’ a strain that reaches out to long lost friends. Among other things this metaphysical but down to earth jazz piece compares the scattering of old friends to the universe expanding; and shows how stars that “fill up space” need no song to dance. In ‘Hearts in Harmony’ a long illusive love song pops out of a sea shell after languishing in the depths. Stefan is going to great lengths to declare his place in history being first to actually find the universal metaphor. But is it the real thing. Take a ‘Walk on the edge of love’s shoreline,’ in this breezy James Tayloresque song and find out. “Leaving shadows of glory in vain” A regular rainbow, a human rainbow and the rainbow of a total solar eclipse become literary rungs on a magic eye ladder that raise ones’ point of view in ‘Rise Above the Rain.’ “Give a whale a hug!” ‘Look Out Ma I Think’ is a pseudo Celtic take off on Spaceship Earth being piloted by billions of inflatable minions. Little Brother is identified for the first time in this delightful doomsday ditty. “And did the locomotive fly; the sky rains with computer hacks, Little Brothers been watching us our System Folder’s in the trash...’ ‘The Wind-Up Monkey Dance,’ an Americana ragtime extravaganza, is poised to mash Macarena by the Millennium. In this wacky hard hat line dance everyone plays invisible violins and winds up a monkey. “The family tree was shaken and no monkey dropped on you” Two whales search for each other in all the wrong oceans in ‘Blue Whale Blues,’ a poignant post modern pop tune with a Brazilian beat. Will they make it through the Panama Canal. “Perhaps their paths will cross and things won’t be so callous beneath the moonlit icebergs and the Aurora Astralis” ‘Jet Fuel Folderol’ exhausts an ‘all’ solitary rhyme scheme as Mr. Poet plays a penurious back seat philosopher during an incessant cab ride in search of Jet Fuel Money. This rollicking rock and roll tune was produced by Sharky McKuen.“I used to mix my metaphors and splash them on the wall, now I just extend them with some jet stream aerosol.” The idea of a transparent peak as a semi- insurmountable obstacle features prominently in ‘Imaginary Mountains,’ a whimsical Dixieland blues number which touches ever so vaguely on the theme of internal and external beauty with the single line: “The sun shines on the mountain and the streams are charged with gold, There just might be some nuggets in that icy cold.” A snowflake melts and becomes an incarnate stream of thought as it drips down to the world taking stones with it as geese in formation offer lyrical counter balance. If the CD is played backwards the water appears to go up the hill. With orchestration gravitating towards Tchaikovsky the sound of a rivers inception is recreated: “The sweeter song is at the source where stones begin to move” Speaking of his unique guitar style, which incidently is not featured on this collection, the artist fresh from a seventeen year sabbatical from the Toronto coffeehouse scene says: “It is important to watch the space between the notes.” When asked to elaborate Stefan said: “I sing therefore I transcend, I get others to sing in my place therefore I transcend transcendence.” Released through Music Kingdom. I've listen for over two years now and I became a member last November. There is no other programming like this on the radio today, except Vin's Idiot's Delight, where singer/songwriters are promoted and played. I've learned so much from the station and the deejays about the different types of music out there today. And what a great website!!! Sorry to see Christine Lavin go on Sunday mornings but it's understandable. Keep up the good work. |

I have written a song called A Miracle America and would like to see it played on the station. At present I am debating on two choruses, if anyone would like to e-mail me thier preferece I would appreciate it. One is "It's a never ending flame/the beauty of the dawn/It's an aura of promise beyond the gold horizon/ A Miracle America the dream lives on and on. The other chorus begins: "Lift high the torch of freedom... A MIRACLE AMERICA The morning sun is golden In the evergreens Like the Torch of Liberty Charging through the foggy beams The landing of the Pilgrims On our verdant shores It’s still the hope of many To walk through Freedom’s door. Lift high the Torch of Freedom May it shine on brilliantly High above the Harbor For all the world to see A Miracle America The light of Liberty At the Gateway to the West Midday sun upon the plains We give thanks to be sharing In this harvest of choice grain The prairie schooners ventured Through treacherous terrains And with hands upon our hearts The pioneer spirit remains And for those brave souls Who were lost to us We remember you with tears And for those who have yet To live the dream May a brighter light appear The eye above the pyramid Is there for all to see We’re free to reach for heaven And to be all we can be The milestone of a footprint Left in the moon dust We can take those giant leaps ‘Cause it’s in God we trust The Shadows in Grand Canyon The day is almost gone Is the vision just for us Or meant to be passed along ©1997 Stefan des Lauriers |

He performs frequently in the northeast (Bitter End, Birchmere, Tin Angel, Iron Horse Music Hall) with many of the folks on your playlist (Eddie From Ohio, Cheryl Wheeler, Fairport Convention, Fred Eaglesmith, Jonatha Brooke, etc) Angie is an absolute paradox. He's got a wrestler's build, bald-head, goatee and the sweetest, most delicate yet powerful vocal delivery in the whole wide world! Angie Aparo is the real deal. Please check him out. |

Although one thing I would like to see is Links through type of music. The links through NPR are listed through station name , which mean nothing to me. As a lover of rap I have yet to see a net rap station and here in Calgary the one we have is very poor I am in hope that someone will connect one. Dana Kingstone |

I was so happy when I accidently stumbled across it while playing with the dial on my walkman. I suddenly heard "and now it's time for Mountain Stage." I was hooked from there. I listened to Mountain Stage for years outside of the city and always lamented about the fact that there was no station I could hear it on at home in NYC, little did I know, there was one right under my nose. Once I discovered that I started listening at other times too and fell in love with the station. I even wrote a song about the elation my discovery caused me to feel. Yay!! Jennie :) |

You might think about having a day with songs about towns and cities. Iris Dimet, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Simon & Garfunfel, etc. You definitely have your own sound which seems to appeal to many of us looking for this change. Combining the NPR news with the complimentary music has been a pleasure to listen to. Also Christine Lavin is special to listen to on Sunday mornings. |

We all thank you for that. I'd like to add that there is a group of people here who are followers of Jim Infantino and his band Jim's Big Ego. Have you heard of him/them? I think your listeners would enjoy the wit of this up and coming artist. I heard today a song by Dan Byrne (?) called Jerusalem which I thought was very reminiscent of many of Jim Infantino's songs. You keep playing and we'll keep listening. |
