Food is a cultural expression. America is made up of many ethnic groups, and as they intermingle into the melting pot, their recipes add interest to the American culture. We are so much richer in our cuisine for the German, the Swiss, the Italians, the Greeks, and many more folks who came here and brought a new recipe.

Fresh greens cooked with with smoked turkey necks. This is called "soul food" by African-Americans.
Virginia Ham
When the ham is from Smithfield, it is the classic Virginia ham for holiday and party buffets. It is a salty ham, well suite to stuffingd inside a yeast biscuit (tea roll), with a bit of mustard. The ham is most flavorful when it's chilled and sliced thin enough to read through.
Bourbon Balls
Traditionally served in a tall glass urn somewhere at the end of the dessert buffet for Christmas parties in central Virginia. A special favorite at office Christmas parties. Makes an excellent gift for the holidays (warning: do not mail to military personnel in lands that forbid alcohol).
Fruit Cake
Buy the fruit before Thanksgiving (used to be in bulk at five and tens, but now in cellophane bags at the grocery store). Soak the fruit starting Thanksgiving weekend. Start these over Thanksgiving weekend to be given as Christmas gifts and enjoyed until Easter.
