Desk Company

Why We Make Stand-Up Desks

That's me, Marty Burns, standing at the very first desk we built in 1983.

I started the business because my back ached from sitting too long at my desk, and I suspected there were a number of others like me. Turns out I was right. In fact, a study of the backs of 31,200 Boeing Company employees several years ago documents that sitting puts 40 to 80 percent more stress on the back than standing; this research by the Spine Resource Clinic at the University of Washington confirmed what my aching back already told me. What I didn't know at the time we began was that stand-up desks had been around for a long time, and some pretty famous people had used them.

In addition to Sir Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Virginia Woolf, and even Thomas Jefferson worked at these unique desks. Rumor has it Dickens' Bob Cratchett also logged some serious hours on his feet.
